You're not the 1st person to say this. Who knew?
Ironically, I've heard from friends that have lived in Savannah for decades that it was never all that good. Her brother has a seafood place called Uncle Bubba's that's better, but still not great.
To add insult to injury (IMO), they don't take reservations, or at least that's what they tell you. They'll tell you that you have to show up in the morning and request a seating time, then you come back at your assigned time and stand around on the sidewalk (where odds are you will be passed by at least one local who will tell you it's not worth it - seriously, I've seen it happen so many times it's nearly comical), and then they bring you in in groups. The kicker is, they do in fact take reservations, if you're a local. Here in Savannah we rely heavily on tourism, and I don't think it's fair to treat locals one way and tourists another. Certainly doesn't sound like Southern hospitality to me.
Mrs. Wilkes is the place for real Southern cooking, in a great atmosphere. Just be prepared to share a table with people you don't know, and to bus your own dishes. But it's well worth it
