When I signed up for the Global Entry, they sent me a Passport Card. The Card is primarily for those who frequently cross the Canadian or Mexican Borders to/from the US by ground. As that does not correspond to me, I just threw it in the home safe.

It suddenly dawned on me it would be useful as an item to carry with me when abroad while my Passport Book resides in the hotel safe. It probably would be more effective than a photocopy of the Book if I need to show ID for some reason but if not, it was free so no harm no foul.

So now I have two backups for my Passport Book when I travel, a photocopy and the Passport Card. In the event of losing my Passport Book, the Card will not allow entry back via air but might speed up a replacement from the Embassy/Consulate vs a paper copy since it is an "official" State Department item.;)

Cheers

Interesting. My husband and I both have passport cards because we do cross the border frequently, and of course, we have our regular passports also. However, our passport cards do not have the same numbers as our regular passports.
