I will forewarn you that this is sorta long and drawn out. Just thought some of you would be interested in "our" check-in story.

So... DH and I arrive at NMB on Wednesday before Thanksgiving and go to OB Tower 4 Lobby to check into our 4 br cottage reserved with ARP October 2014. Check in goes well, cottage is not ready but it's around 1:40 and they say it will be ready by 2:00 so we're happy. Requested two pack 'n plays for twin grandsons and they are being delivered to cottage. Go over to get parking pass and the girl is so excited to tell us that they have "Thanksgiving" food over at Member Services in Tower 2 and we should go get something to eat while we wait.

We're a little skeptical but hadn't had lunch so we said okay. As the two girls behind the counter had been, almost giddily, telling us about the food they were also mentioning that we could go to a breakfast meeting on Friday or Saturday since they knew we wouldn't want to on Thanksgiving and they could give us tickets to the Christmas Show at Carolina Opry for all the people in our party. I knew we probably wouldn't be going to a show and wasn't really interested but was going along to speed up the process.

Now for the "rest of the story." Parking pass girl walks with us across the street to Tower 2 to show us where the food is... so we go to the Member Services desk and they start telling us someone will be with us in just a minute to give us our update, etc. DH and I are looking at each other like, Who said anything about an update? I told the girl at the MS desk that we weren't there for an update, just for lunch. Then a man hears us and assures us that everything will be "made right." Seems the "lunch" food (sandwiches) was gone and the heavier food (bbq chicken, bbq pork, mashed potatoes, etc.) was on its way. So we keep insisting that we need to go, that our cottage is probably ready by now, etc. So same man reappears and is speaking to the girl who has now been assigned to give us our update and says they will also give us a $100 AMEX card. Well that doesn't sound bad and since we're already there, we decide to go through the process.

BAD IDEA! She takes us to a different room "that isn't as crowded/noisy" so we can talk while the promised food arrives. The main premise of the update is about the Norwegian cruises being added and can be reserved with points and then it is highly suggested that we also need to add a small CWA contract to our account b/c we love coming to NMB (where we own) and more points at the Myrtle Beach resorts are now CWA than individual deeds. Somehow I find that very hard to believe! In the meantime, I've gotten a call saying our cottage is ready and I can come pick up the keys. Since it is now around 3 pm, I know I need to get back over to check-in desk b/f all the 4:00 arrivals are there. I leave (much to the dismay of our update girl) to get the keys and am very glad I did b/c the lobby was filling up with people fast! When I got back, DH was eating and I went to get a plate. Our girl was talking fast about all the reasons we should add the CWA contract and then had a "closer" come over.

I was finished eating by now and got a text from our daughter and family who were "20 minutes away" and, at the rate things were going, might arrive at the cottage b/f we got there ourselves! When the "closer" got to the table, he started his spiel, and I just stood up and said we have to go. He was like, it won't take long for me to explain... I understand you're having trouble getting in at Ocean Blvd. and we can help you with that. I was like, who said that? We come here all the time. I haven't had any problems at all! Well, from the looks of "our girl's" face, she was the one who told him that -- not sure why... I just said, we don't have time. Our daughter and her family are almost here and we need to leave NOW so we will be at the cottage when they arrive. He kept trying to say, it won't take long etc. I said, our family is more important. We're leaving! So we walked out.

Did go by for the AMEX card and show tickets (which we didn't use) and got to the cottage a couple minutes b/f DD and family arrived.

Other than all that crap, we had a wonderful time. The weather has been beautiful - sunny and 70's. Our Thanksgiving meal was good, our daughter and son-in-law got some shopping done while we enjoyed the grand-kids and all is well with the world. Such a shame, they offered us lunch and turned that first hour or so into a fiasco!

Sounds good for an hour and half while waiting for your room. Now, if you mixed in a few paragraphs (ENTER button), it would be a much easier read, and not feel so long and drawn out.

Thanks for the tango report, luvNMB52. It just confirms that we can never trust those people at the parking pass desk. I know I don't. My blood pressure goes up a notch when I just think about having to talk with them.

I've noticed a definite uptick in the aggressiveness of the parking pass person recently. Not only do they not accept the no thank you easily but they insist you give them a reason why you turn them down. They are getting desperate.

I had a colleague who was cancelling their internet service, and the company kept asking personal questions about his family such as how many kids they had, what devices they owned, their internet usage, what web services and websites they used. He kept saying "just cancel our service," and they kept asking the questions.

Exasperated, he finally responded to the woman: "Are you pregnant? How much money do you make an hour? Do you have any health issues?" The lady responded, "Why should I answer that, what does it matter?"

He said, "Well I thought since you felt you could ask me any personal question you wanted over my objections, it would be OK to do the same to you." Internet cancelled.

Just wait til the "universal agent" hits YOUR Wyndham resort checkin counter... it won't be the parking pass girl dance BUT the "Give me MY room key" stand off.

Coming soon to ALL resorts ....

Ugh. So, I guess that means I should plan to use my Wyndham points just for exchanges from now on. I have no desire to be harassed on my vacation. We stayed at DVC and Marriott on exchanges this year, and nobody bothered us about attending presentations. But when we went to Glacier Canyon, it was the same old parking pass/owner update routine.

Galena wasn't quite as bad. Just a phone call. However, we checked in pretty late at night, so I imagine the sales staff wasn't around. If I have to fight off the sales staff at 10:30 at night after a long drive just to get my room key, it's not going to be pretty.

Our family was at Ocean Blvd during Thanksgiving week as well and stayed in Tower 2. I forewarned my parents (who arrived before us and checked us in) to say NO repeatedly when asked about an Owners Update. They said even though they said NO NO NO, they were signed up for an "update" the next day....which they did not attend.

The resort was great, as was the weather.

We are considering a cottage next time......did you all use the shuttle to come over to the beach, or did you just walk? That was our only concern.

I think I'm going to start telling them that I'm ignoring them and to wave when they are ready to give me my room key and parking pass, and then put on some headphones and listen to my MP3 player while they jabber on... They have Sea Gardens staff helping out this week at Royal Vista, and they are relentless. They keep going on and on and asking why you don't want to go. When we were at Sea Gardens in January, the guy followed us into the parking lot.

The last time I stayed at MB through RCI I was put in tower 1 because I was a Wyndham owner. But the parking pass person insisted I give them my driver's license even after I had already checked in. I resisted and it got ugly. Don't give in to them. You are already checked in. Give me the darn parking pass!

Is the UAM (Universal Agent Manager)... for the Front Desk, Chad working? He is directly from the top floor (sales) and is the now Front Desk Manager ... having laid off the 2 senior members of the Front Desk 3 weeks ago. His idea of working is being on the customer side of the counter and following you around. I refused to do the tour ... he insisted .. lots of time slots available until he attached my name to the times slot ... seems I must be on the "Do Not Tour" list as suddenly inside of 5 minutes, all the slot had been filled and Chad was acting "funny". So, I just asked, "So I am on the 'Do Not Tour' list?" Then he got MORE funny .... let's not tell Chad about TUG.... just remind him, YOUR good friend Linda - was at RV last Monday & Tuesday, says "hi".

Sales updates to get checked in

Hi! Is anyone planning to attend owners meeting? Can someone try and bring this up about hounding us at check in to attend. We have all paid good money and maintenance fees. A simple No Thanks should suffice. No one wants to spend valuable vacation time on this.

Thanks

Carol

I have previously posted about our experience at Wyn Kona Hawaiian Resort with them keeping the key to the unit “hostage” while we go to get the Parking Pass and can you believe that when we checked in again here, the gal at the parking pass desk said, Well, since you attended before, you won’t be required to attend again.
What? Since when are we REQUIRED to attend? Hahah – never again will my husband and I both check in … will take a TUGGERS advice and only one of us check in – actually it will ME, since DH is overcome to “help” and believe the Parking Pass gals….when we found out what they said was untrue, he said they weren’t lying, they were just “misinformed “ .. okay, whatever……the outcome is the same.

Being 'alone' didn't work for me recently at Smoky Mountain. I was hounded by the PPP (parking pass person) beyond belief. She was rude and condescending by saying things like....sorry you are having such a bad day. Another line was...you mean you can't tell me in a simple sentence why you don't want to go to breakfast? Enough said. As I stated earlier I've noticed a definite uptick in their aggressiveness.

We walked but mainly b/c we had twin grandsons in a stroller. DH and older grandson rode the shuttle a few times and found it very convenient. We were in Cottage 3 which is a location nearer to the beach than some others. This was our 3rd Thanksgiving at T he Cottages. We really like it! Wasn't the weather grand?!!

The weather was great. We have made several trips to the NC & SC coast for Thanksgiving (we have family there). We have had 40s and rain some years....and 70s and sun some years. Very thankful for this year's weather.

We book in the 10 month window, are the cottages usually available at that point? We booked late this year because we were canceling a summer trip and changed plans, so a few months out nothing was available in the cottages.

I hope you are all very expressive when filling out the follow up surveys when you are back at home. The last one I filled out, I explained in detail how deceitful the "conceirge" was and I ended the explanation with, "I'm on vacation. Leave me the **** alone!" I did not use asterisks on the survey.

It is strange but I have not received a followup survey for the last few times I've checked in and have been rudely treated. Are they selectively avoiding owners with possible negative feedback?

I plan to continue to provide negative feedback about the check-in process and the parking pass process as long as Wyndham forces this on us. They never seem to let up, and as soon as they grasp that I am insistent on saying "no" they become very short and rude with unpleasant expressions and tones. I have received surveys for other recent stays, and have provided this negative feedback. Although I haven't received a survey for my most recent stay, which should have come by now and makes me wonder if I'm now cut-off from providing feedback. If that's the case, then Wyndham doesn't truly care about the owner experience and only wants positive feedback.

I haven't received surveys for my last two stays, now that I think about it. I might be on the naughty list for too many negative surveys, all regarding the parking pass situation.

We need a 4 bedroom (only 10 of those) so I always use ARP 13 months out. The first year we spent Thanksgiving at NMB, though, I made a reservation at Towers on the Grove (only needed 3 brs then) about 8 months out and, about a month away from travel time, I started watching for Cottage availability and finally saw a cottage - probably picked up a cancellation. There are more 3 br cottages so you might have better luck getting one that size at 10 mos.

Good luck!

Parking pass scam

Stayed in Las Vegas in Nov and at 1:00 am got the parking pass girl. From the east coast this was 5AM! We had a week last minute rental so set up the appointment for the day after we left mid week. But the new trick is we had to pay $10 (Cash only) which we would get back when we attended breakfast. DH looked at me, forked over $10 and we counted it money well spent to escape. However it still digs at me that we had to pay $10 to get out of it. Also did all the surveys and my ratings were good Except for the parking pass scam. Never heard back from anyone. Big surprise. I also am considering just using points to exchange into more user friendly locations such as DVC and Diamond, both of which we stayed in last month with no aggressive and aggravating behavior.

The real trick is that you do not have to attend these breakfast/update/survey events. Just say no and stand your ground. You are already registered and have your key. The parking pass is just a scam to get you to their sales presentation.

Just say No! They can't force you to attend. And they cannot force you to give them the $10 or $20. It would be a cold day in hell before I forked over any of my money to them.
