The Pacific Whale Foundation starts Whale "Search" cruises on November 15, 2008, a Whale "Welcome" cruise on November 29, 2008, and Whale "Watch" cruises starting on Nov. 30, 2008. The Whale Watch cruises guarantee that you will see whales. The searches do not. The Welcome the whales cruise might (the person at PWF wasn't sure, but thinks that they guaranteed whales for the welcome cruise).

Has anyone ever done a whale search or whale welcome cruise? How about an early season whale watch cruise? I'm wondering if they are still worthwhile. Our last day in the islands will be the day of the Whale Welcome.

Thanks for any information.

We traveled Nov 12-19, 2006 and saw two whales, albeit quite a distance aways. Whales will undoubtedly be around by the end of November, but they certainly won't be as plentiful as they'll be in mid-December.

In early April '04, we actually had better luck finding whales with a sunset sailboat cruise that wasn't even billed as a whale watching adventure than we did with the "official" whale watch cruise we took a few days later. That was after the "official" whale season.

Bottom line: if there's a chance you'll see a whale breaching, go for it. It's remarkable.
