I am staying at Marriott Grande Chateau and decided to do the owners update. I have two EOY weeks- one at MCV and one SDO both 2 bedroom platinum lockoffs. I was interested in converting my externally purchased weeks (eBay) to the Abound/ points program. They said my two weeks combined equals 1969 club points per year, and ultimately it would cost me 20k to get the points level to 4000 before I could do it. This included a bonus of 2500 club points added onetime to my account. Membership fee was about $245 per year and MF would remain the same. I declined but wondered what the Marriott Tug braintrust thought?

I guess it depends on how much you like flexibility and what price you’d pay to have it. For us we’ve found the flexibility to be worth the price.

Marriott: Ocean Watch, Newport Coast, Grand Chateau, Custom House, Timber Lodge, VCP's.
Keep in mind that 4,000 points are not enough for one Platinum reservation at Newport Coast, Ocean Watch, and many other better locations. You might be better off just renting points - at less than the maintenance fees.

For $20,000 you could buy 2 Newport Coast platinum weeks, very usable, easily rented, or you could exchange through Interval for lots of great reservations. Summer platinum weeks generally have a fairly short number of weeks in the platinum season - you will get a week in that season. For example, Newport Coast platinum weeks are weeks 20 to 25 and 27 to 32 (Jul 4th is a platinum fixed week).

Can’t rent points in she doesn’t own points or have an enrolled week.
She could buy the minimum number of points resale and then rent more if needed as opposed to buying enough points from MVC to be allowed to enroll the resale.
I would encourage the OP to take a look at the points charts and determine how many points they would need to accomplish their goals. A night or 2 could always be added to a week stay with cash booked on MVC with the owners discount code rather than buying points for that purpose.

This is a confusing statement.

You can’t buy a resale unit that can be elected to points on the open market.
Resale units purchased anyplace but directly from MVC are no enrolled.
It’s not the rofr that is the problem.

You can’t buy a resale unit (which is what’s subject to rofr) that can be elected to points on the open market.
Yeah the sales guy said I could sell my points later if I wanted to - wasn’t sure if that was true either

Sure you can sell them, but not for anywhere near what you paid for them.

Resale points are going for around $4 each.
If you buy resale points you need to pay MVC $3 per point to activate them.
So all in a resale point is $7.

How davidvel?
Follow these instructions:
Here is how to access the webinar. You must be a US resident to participate and enroll for free;
  1. Sign in to your account, then:
  2. Under the RESOURCES tab in the menu across the top of the page, click on "Helpful Tools"
  3. Scroll down and click on the "Ownership Webinar" box at the bottom.
  4. If you receive a pop-up asking if it is okay to leave the page, click "Yes".
  5. You should land on the InsiderFoundations / Owner Learning Center page.
  6. Scroll to the last video, "Understanding the Benefits of Enrolling Webinar" and note the small print:
Owners who reside in the U.S. whose weeks were purchased by June 20, 2010, will be offered free enrollment in the Marriott Vacation Club Destinations Exchange Program after viewing this entire presentation.

I don't think you can book hotels with Club Points, just TS resorts. You could elect for Bonvoy points, but that is a rip.

Again you really want to look into this and run numbers to see if it is worth it to actually purchase points.
While you can book some hotels with abound points, hotels are more commonly booked using Bonvoy points.
For shorter stays you would want to balance the cost of purchasing points, paying yearly maintenance fees, and being sure to use them within the short period before they expire (you can only bank for 1 year) with just going ahead and booking shorter stays with cash.

The way that this works best (IMO) is if you can enroll your week (for free) and then perhaps you know you can’t timeshare for a full week one year or want to visit a resort you haven’t been able to exchange into you can elect your week to points that year.

Note also that when you enroll your week you pay MVC club dues that comes with a free II account and gives you free lock off and free exchanging in II among Abound properties. This II account can only hold enrolled weeks- if you own unenrolled or other brands you would still have to buy a regular II account for them.
For me this was a cost savings because I always locked off and exchanged into MVC and it also elimated the need to buy eplus since exchange was free.

You can "enroll" your MVC week for little or nothing. Once enrolled you will then be able to "rent" points (for around 75 cents per point) and you can rent them anytime you actually need them. Why pay $20,000 that you talked about in your first post? No need to ever do so!

I wouldn't assume they are being dishonest. Sales hates to waste their time.

Their computer might not have that information. Remember MVC and Vistana IT is not the best. We went to a presentation at WKV and they spent the entire time trying to convince us to enroll our resale WKORV which is already grandfathered into Abound Aug 2023 and we have an account and points that we used. In fact we used Abound points for that trip.

We have another WKV resale post 2022 that is unenrolled and they never discussed enrolling that one. They wasted their time and I didn't have the heart to correct them since we weren't going to buy and wanted to close the meeting ASAP.

Developer purchase isn't the deciding factor, week must be purchased before June 2010, developer or resale. OP stated "we were able to get free enrollment on our last encore visit," which implied the encore visit was necessary. (This how we enrolled our week prior to the free webinar being rolled out.)

My point was to highlight that you don't need to buy an Encore to get free enrollment. OP may have bought the Encore anyway, and they just enrolled as a result, I don't know.

To summarize: Any week bought pre June 2010 (resale or developer) can be enrolled for free by watching webinar (not a sales pitch). Post 6/2020 purchases (developer or not) require tens of thousands of dollars of points to be purchased.

You can enrol your MCV week by following the link above and watching the webinar. Your SDO week cannot be enrolled this way.

You can only enrol SDO by buying Abound points or Aventuras/Sheraton/Westin/Nanea points.

The cheapest way to this currently is the following way.
I recently visited the Westin Lagunamar and attended the owner update. During the update, I received an offer to requalify one of my Vistana weeks with a $10,000 Aventuras purchase (37000 star options EOY). The retro price to is much higher on Marriott Vacation Club (MVC).

MF is ~$367 every other year so its $734 annual for 37000 aventuras points. Most likely I will elected to Abound (~1233 points) since I own MVC as well. So it will be about 2 cents per options or 60 cents per DP. Bundling with 1M incentives makes it a dang good requalify offer. Is it not?
