We will be staying at Villa del Palmar in Cancun for 12 nights in early January.

We want to visit Chichen Itza and several people have suggested spending a night at the Mayaland hotel in order to see the evening lights and to have access to the grounds before all the tour buses arrive in the morning.

We will not have a car, so we have to go by bus or tour. What is the best way to get to Chichen Itza in the morning on one day and back to Cancun the next afternoon if we do not drive?

When I was there on a day tour from Grand Mayan, Riviera Maya, there were people there on the type of tour you describe with the overnight hotel stay. We had our included lunch at that hotel.

I don't recall the tour company but there are many that do this....just google search.

Edit.
We used grayline tours

Here is overnight

Another reputable company.

You might email Mayaland with your inquiry. We spent a night there a few years ago, but drove a rental car. Having wheels enabled us to sample some area restaurants as well as a visit to Merida. The stay and show were indeed memorable.

You could take the bus to Chichen Itza, spend the night, take the bus back to Cancun. Chichen Itza was really hot by 10:30 am. I was glad we had early entrance through Maya Land Resort.

The VDP is the last drop off for many of the tours making this a 12 - 14 hour day if you do a large chartered tour.

You can take the ADO bus from Cancun to Chichen Itza, then a taxi to the Mayaland hotel. Make sure you make reservations way ahead of time, the hotel is very busy, but the closest to the ruins, an easy walk.

Once we pay admission to the ruins, do we have in-and-out privileges? One reason for staying at the hotel is to be able to take a break and then go back later in the day.

If we stay overnight and want to go back to the ruins the next morning, do we pay another admission fee or is there a multiple day option?

If your at Maya Land, the trail is not gated to the ruins, and the pay station guy, who is supposedly there by 8am, may not be at the pay station. You will see many locals taking trails into the park by 7am to set up their souvenir stands.

We had coffee and a light breakfast at the resort and went into the ruins without anyone checking our tickets. We were on the grounds by 8:05am.

By 10:30 it was sweltering hot. I kid you not, it was hot. We left the ruins before 11am to check out and then went to the pool, jumped in to get cool. The unheated pool is really nice but it is as cold as ice, when you first jump in.

When we stayed at Mayaland, we hired a private guide through the hotel. I think it was around $100. It was well worth it. We were able to enter in the morning when the gate opened, and he stayed with us throughout our tour of the grounds. He was well versed on the history of Chichen Itza and spoke excellent English. This was the highlight of our trip to the Cancun area. We did have a rental car so can't advise on other transportation.
