At our last owner update, we were told the "exciting" news that our World of Hyatt points can now be used for tours, cruises, and destination credits (i.e. free food at the resort).

Does this mean that the developer can now sell more points than there are units available?

World of Hyatt is the hotel side of things, which is still actually owned by the family which formerly owned the timeshare side as well. The hotel points were always the worst way to use a Hyatt timeshare and that hasn't changed. So little has happened on the timeshare side (no new resorts are being built, there is nothing "exciting" happening); that they're pitching exciting hotel programs they have no control over.

Ideally, stop going on these exciting presentations. They just want to sell the "new-and-improved (tm)" Portfolio Program. This allows them to keep selling the same resorts, over and over and over. Great for them. Lousy for everyone else.

They cannot sell more ”units” than are available throughout the system. The points they are selling are backed by units that are available in the system. The issue could and likely will arise when owners demand for particular weeks exceed the supply. It’s a first come first serve system, like others, so some owners won’t find availability where and when they want it. The non-timeshare uses for points never seem to be as good a value.

Interesting information, thank you. Good to know they can't oversell units available.

BTW, we have had a huge change of heart regarding Owner Updates. We used to avoid them like the plague. Two things changed: we retired, and we moved quite close to the San Diego property. We now view Owners Updates as a profit center and earn $800/year, tax free.
