Orbitz notified me by email last night the fare has dropped for the flight that I was searching for. When I clicked the link, it did show the low fare. However, when I tried to book it now, it said:

"We're sorry, but due to changes in airline availability, the fare for your selected trip is no longer available. We have adjusted the fares for all affected itineraries. The fare for your selected trip is now $821 total. See below."

Is this a way for Orbitz to lure me to visit their web site, and these fare drop emails were lies?

No this happens all the time. Air fares change without notice and availability changes.

I have the same problem with Travelocity. So many people signed up for the alerts that by the time the e-mail gets to me the 'alerted flight' price is usually long gone.

It was a good service that is now useless.
