I had never heard of this scam, but beware of strayers approaching you on words with friends or any app with messaging as well as on dating sites.

I see this all the time in law enforcement. They target older, single people and will often claim to be in the military and need money to come home.
They will also send you money, like $1000 and ask you to send back $500 but as soon as you send them money, the money in your account disappears.

Kind of like the TS scam with the allegedly hearing-impaired buyer who sends you money for the sale of your TS and then asks you to forward the commission to his broker?

I am on the dating scene and I immediately know the scammers. In addition, just do a background check and you can protect yourself even more.

I have been shocked by how many intelligent people get drawn into this mess. Emotions are powerful things.

Scammers also play on a lack of experience with technology and get people to give them access to their personal computers, causing all kinds of chaos and charging the victims money to do it.
