On the Hunt for the Nazi Gold Train. Inside the Polish Tunnels That May Hold the Bullion. - by Matthew Day, Walim/ News/ WorldNews/ The Telegraph/ telegraph.co.uk

"Claims that a long-lost train carrying Nazi gold is close to being found have brought excitement to a Polish town.

There has always been a bit of gold in the steep, tree-decked hills around Walbrzych in southern Poland. Enough to prompt the opening of a few mines long ago, and enough for tourists to still chance their luck with a gold pan in the fast flowing rivers. But never enough to generate excitement and frenzy. Until now, that is.

Two men have claimed to have found what could be a legendary Nazi ghost train that disappeared without trace into the mountains around Walbrzych in April 1945 with a cargo of gold as it fled the advance of the Red Army. If the claim is true, then there could be a fortune beneath the people’s feet, and that has got them excited..."

Radar Detects Object Below Ground in Poland Believed to Be Missing Nazi Gold Train - from the Associated Press/ World/ FoxNews.com

WARSAW, Poland – "A Polish official says he has seen images made by ground-penetrating radar that seem to prove the discovery of an armored Nazi train missing in southwestern Poland since World War II.

Local lore says a German train filled with gold, gems and armaments went missing around the city of Walbrzych while it was fleeing the Red Army in 1945. Fortune-hunters have looked for the so-called "gold train" for decades, and in the communist era, the Polish army and security services carried out apparently fruitless searches for it.

Recently two men said they found the train in a disused tunnel..."

Polish Cops Block Treasure Hunters Seeking Nazi 'Gold Train' - by Dan Kedmey/ World/ time.com

"Authorities blockaded a rural tract of train tracks amid an influx of treasure hunters.

Authorities rushed to blockade a stretch of train track in rural Poland after the reported discovery of an abandoned train reignited long-held rumors that a Nazi train, freighted with gold and gems, had supposedly vanished into the hills in the spring of 1945.

Dozens of treasure hunters, some equipped with metal detectors, have swarmed into the wooded hills outside of the city of Walbrzych in southwest Poland, the AP reports. Governor Tomasz Smolarz said that police have been deployed to block entry points into the woods and ensure infiltrators do not attempt to walk along the still active train tracks and risk an accident..."

Nazi 'Gold Train': Poland to Bring in Army to Help in Hunt - From theguardian/ World/ Europe/ theguardian.com

"Poland will deploy the military to look for an alleged Nazi “gold train” that sparked global fascination after two anonymous treasure hunters claimed they had pinpointed where it is buried.

“The defence minister decided to send technical equipment to search the area in order to determine whether a train actually exists,” a defence ministry spokesman, Jacek Sonta, said on Tuesday.

“The army is acting at the request of the governor of the region concerned.”

On Monday Tomasz Smolarz, the governor of the south-western region of lower Silesia, said it was “impossible to claim that such a find actually exists at the location indicated based on the documents that have been submitted”.

This comes just days after a senior culture ministry official said on Friday that he was “more than 99% sure” an armoured railway carriage had been found with ground-penetrating radar images.

Smolarz said no such images had been submitted to authorities..."

Polish Military Urges Caution in Search of Rumored Nazi Gold Train Site - by Carol J. Williams/ World/ Europe/ Los Angeles Times/ latimes.com

"Polish military experts planning to examine the site where a Nazi "gold train" may have gone missing during World War II have urged authorities to first clear the thickly forested area in case it contains booby traps or volatile weapons.

New theories that the train may contain dangerous cargo have surfaced in recent days as the wooded foothills of the Owl Mountains have become the center of fevered attention for history buffs, treasure hunters and tourism promoters.

Authorities in the Lower Silesia region have warned from the outset of the purported discovery of the legendary treasure train that if it does exist, it may have been fixed with explosives or mounted guns to protect its cargo.

The British tabloid newspaper Daily Mail added to the fears of what might be discovered in the excavation when it published an article Tuesday quoting unidentified sources familiar with the recent find as speculating that the train might have been carrying the bodies of slave laborers who died building a network of tunnels for the Nazis during World War II.

Two treasure hunters set off an international frenzy in mid-August when they reported to authorities in the Lower Silesian castle town of Walbrzych that they had located a more than 300-foot-long train buried in a tunnel near the rail line that leads from the regional capital, Wroclaw..."

And in other news, Hiltler's remains have been spotted on the dark side of the moon by a Brazilian Dentist flying a homebuilt drone with a GoPro camera. The remains were located near what appears to be a crashed V-2 rocket.

Possible Nazi Tunnels Fuel Treasure Seekers in Poland - by Joanna Berendt/ Europe/ Walbrzych Journal / International New York Times/ The New York Times/ nytimes.com

WALBRZYCH, Poland — "The gold diggers have arrived here in Lower Silesia.

They have stormed the Ksiaz Castle. Upended earth and artifacts. Emptied store shelves of metal detectors.

In normal times, this province in southwest Poland has an unassuming charm and struggles financially. But since two groups of explorers claimed to have discovered evidence related to a local legend — a Nazi train loaded with treasures, supposedly hidden here — nothing has been the same.

“The thaw for unearthing the secrets of our region has begun,” Krzysztof Kwiatkowski, governor of Walbrzych County, told reporters two weeks ago.

The legend could be the basis for a movie: Hidden in the forested mountains near here is a secret underground city built on Hitler’s orders. As the Soviet Army advanced in the closing days of World War II, the Nazis fled, leaving behind a train loaded with gold, gems and armaments.

For more than 70 years, the legend endured, though many historians scoffed at it. But in late August, two explorers, Piotr Koper and Andreas Richter, claimed to have found what they believed to be the mysterious “gold train.”..."

Hopes Dashed Again in Hunt for Fabled Nazi Gold Train in Poland - by Joanna Berendt/ World/ Europe/ International New York Times/ The New York Times/ nytimes.com

"WALBRZYCH, Poland — Experts from the Krakow University of Science and Technology said on Tuesday that, contrary to 70 years of local folklore, there is no trace of any armored Nazi train filled with looted treasure buried near Walbrzych in southwestern Poland.

“There may be a tunnel,” said Janusz Madej, the head of the scientific team, “but there is no train.”

The findings did not persuade the two amateur explorers who have been claiming since August to have located the fabled train. They declared on Tuesday that it was still there and that they would keep pressing to dig it out.

The Krakow University team of geologists and engineers surveyed the site in November using magnetic and gravitation methods, Mr. Madej said at a news conference. The examination revealed some anomalies in the ground, he said, but they are no more than about eight feet below the surface, while the train was supposed to be 30 feet underground.

“The anomalies could be remnants of a collapsed tunnel,” he said.

The two amateur explorers — Piotr Koper, a Polish construction company owner, and Andreas Richter, a German geologist — said in August that they had “irrefutable proof” of the existence and location of the train, which was thought to be filled with gold, gems and weapons and sealed in a tunnel in the closing days of World War II. Their announcement put the 120,000 inhabitants of the usually quiet city of Walbrzych at the center of a global frenzy..."

Explorer: No Train or Tunnel at Search Site for Nazi Train - From Tribune News Services/ Warsaw, Poland/ Chicago Tribune/ chicagotribune.com

"Explorers' great hopes for finding a legendary Nazi "gold train" in Poland appeared dashed Wednesday when, after digging extensively, they admitted they have found "no train, no tunnel" at the site.

The legend has sparked a gold rush, drawing in drawn explorers and treasure hunters from across Europe to Poland's southwestern town of Walbrzych, and prompting local authorities to dream about a great inflow of tourists and money..."

Fabled Nazi Gold Train: Is the Hunt Over?
By Deutsche Welle/ Culture/ DW/ dw.com

"A treasure hunt duo that made international headlines with its search for a fabled gold-filled underground Nazi train has split up. Why one of the amateur historians has given up.

The two amateur historians had boundless faith that they would one day find the legendary "treasure train" believed to be hidden by Nazi troops in an underground mountain tunnel as the Germans fled the area between Wroclaw and Walbrzych in southwestern Poland at the end of WW II.

Two years after grabbing the attention of the international media with their spectacularly ambitious hunt, Andreas Richter ended the joint search with Piotr Koper.

'95 percent sure it exists'

It's over, Richter told the DPA press agency, arguing that while he hadn't lost belief in the train's existence – "I am 95 percent sure it exists" –, he was frustrated by "inaccuracies" in the excavation procedure. The initial excavation didn't go deep enough, he said, adding that a second attempt never materialized because his partner kept on postponing. At some point, Richter was fed up.

"I don't want to do anything foolish any more," the German genealogist said, adding that the venture had already cost him 80,000 euros ($93,400). He conceded, however, that despite his frustration, he "had a good time and learned a lot, too."

Unfazed, his former partner Koper said he plans to continue the search on his own, beginning "this winter." He is confident he will have the funds and permit he needs by then. Winter is a good time, he says: "No nesting birds, no flowering shrubs, it's the best time to search for the train."...."
