Well, they can just kiss me goodbye! No more TP, or Purell, and to add insult to injury, they've suspended free samples! What do they expect me to do to while away my otherwise empty Saturdays?

Worldwide recession, here we come! All because of Costco!

OK. Just kidding. Not about the noshing, but the rest.

Jim

Everyone freaking out about TP. CottonElle wipes work perfectly. Ppl forget about those.

Stand in line at the Food Court? ;)

Dave

Was just at our local Costco out by corporate HQ. No TP, so we got the flushable wipes. Not sure why, but they put a limit on paper towels. And people were stocking up. Wasn't overly crowded for a Saturday.

Earlier this week my daughter went to several grocery/variety stores for TP, and finally found some, 4 rolls for $7 !

Finally went to our local one for my monthly run. Crazy parking lot driving. No carts. Ppl were stockpiling toilet paper and paper towels. No water nor hand sanitizer. The lines were much longer than normal but ppl were in good spirits.
Then I went to our Costco Business. Most items in stock. Limit on water though. However zero instant noodles. And this one carries at least 7 different types. Oh well. Will need to go to the Korean market.

I don't understand the run on TP & bottled water. We drink tap water at home and 1 multi-pak of TP last the 2 of us quite some time. People are just going crazy! As a retiree, I go out early and during times when there are not a lot of folks out as I like to get in and out quickly - no Saturday or Sunday shopping at all!!! I was at Sam's yesterday morning and they were out of TP, but had lots of water -neither were on my list.

Just a reminder....flushable wipes are a definite No-no if you are on a septic system...they really gum up the works.

I have also read that some public systems aren't fond of them either.

Buying water (or simply storing some from your own faucet) for reserves is always a good idea. Municipalities sometimes have issues with their water and will sometimes instruct people to boil it. Sometimes it could come out brown.

If you have a well the pump could break. The electric could go out and your well won't pump- unless you have it on a generator. I have seen it all and we always keep some reserves of water.

Heck- there could be a terrorist attack on the water supply. Anything can happen. You can't just assume nothing could ever happen to your water.

We do not care what the manufacture says we do not believe there is any such thing as a flushable wipe. They all cause problems with private septic or public system.

Nyc it’s 6 bucks for 4 rolls of TP on a normal day. Costco in Harlem was packed, plenty of paper towels and TP. I had to buy some for my mother returning from a trip who said she had none in the house. Gone for the month and was going to shop when she returned, who knew this would happen?! I got her coffee too. I’ve stocked up on water because I drink gallons of spring water anyway so I’ll buy as much as I can as often as I can so when I run out I won’t have to worry about people who have stockpiled.

Yes but NYC has a much higher cost of living than Seattle, and I think on average higher salaries too.

Do you think people on nyc are all rich? I can tell you that it is most definitely not the case.

Those of us who travel frequently south of the US border should be quite familiar with disposing of sanitary products as solid waste instead of sending them down the sewer. That's why they put waste baskets near the toilets.

This must be a west coast story. The cost of living in Seattle is very high IMHO.

Kroger also gave out free samples, apparently they've stopped that because of the coronavirus

We always keep some bottled water for traveling and we only drink filtered water from the fridge, not from the faucet, But, also, our county water supply has very high levels of lime in it. Our vet suggested we buy jugs of drinking water for the pets because the lime causes higher risks of kidney damage in the pets that drink it so we always have a couple of gallons for them. We haven’t noticed a run on the grocery stores in our area but there haven’t been any reported cases of covid-19 here and we don’t shop at Costco so can’t say for sure about there.

I've always been annoyed and grossed out by the free samples. I don't enjoy shopping, so I just want to get in, grab my stuff and get out. It's really inconvenient to navigate around all the people going there just to eat a free lunch. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to get down an aisle, only to be swarmed by a pack of people who aren't even buying anything but happened to see the free food tray and lose control of their personal boundaries.

We hate it as well and stopped going midday just to avoid it. It’s ridiculous. The whole family goes to Costco just to eat free samples.

So now, we either shop at Costco during the first hour of opening (before free samples have started) or the last hour of closing (after free samples have already ended)

Thank you for keeping the crowds down as we eat free samples while we shop.

I have no inside intelligence, but suspect that this is a) response to HQ being in Kirkland WA, b) to reduce hand-to-mouth contact, and c) to reduce the whole families coming in to nosh. Just a guess, tho.

Amen! I’ve seen people come in and park their kids in the furniture section sprawled on the couches noshing.

 That's another Costco gripe of mine. When I want to look at/try out furniture, because I am looking for furniture, I can't check it out due to people loitering on the furniture.

Today was my first foray into Costco since the panic buying began and the curtailment of free samples. I must say the aisles uncluttered at each end with free handout stations sure made getting around the warehouse MUCH easier. Of course, it helped that it's a weekday before noon as well. There was plenty of TP- though they limited purchases to 2 bales. There was no Kirkland water, though plenty of Arrowhead Spring Water. I made my customary lap and was able to get the necessities and a few impulse items. Now the freezer is full-er, and starvation is fended off for a few more days. Now, if only some authority would say, "You're quarantined!" I could go to work on all the goodies I have stashed!

I hear you about diving into the goody stash. Our cupboards are stocked and ready. I don’t necessarily want to quarantine myself, but if needed, I could do it.

My kids were very disappointed when free samples were not offered at Costco. I have a feeling they will no longer want to go shopping w/ me.
