there are technically 4 different resale groups don’t quote e on the dates lol. Honestly after the last 2 rounds of restrictions have kept me from adding on…
- those that are full grandfathered- their points can be used for anything, cruises non DVC resorts ect. Some where around 2010 this ended.
March 21, 2011. My first DVC purchase was resale at BCV back in 2007 when resale and direct were treated equally. Buying VWL direct and BCV resale were about the same price and at the last minute we decided that owning next to EPCOT and HS was a better long term choice for us.
- The next group is grandfathered to all DVC and member benefits just not able to exchange into cruises ect…this ended somewhere around 2017ish?
April 3, 2016. My next DVC purchase was at BLT and much to my amazement it had become substantially cheaper to buy resale because of the restrictions DVC had introduced. So we bought resale.
- Anyone after that point that purchased resale is limited to the original 14 DVCs- from what I understand those owners cannot even see inventory for the newer resorts.
The restriction of resale points to the 'original 14' was introduced January 17, 2019. I had been entertaining the idea of buying at VGC and the day they announced the coming restriction I made an offer on the best contract I could find. Until recently I had mostly used the VGC points at DL and rented some out, but just a few days ago I used a bunch of my VGC points for a Riviera ressie.
- the next group of resale is restricted to only their home resort…If I were to buy resale RIV I can only stay at RIV.
I foolishly sold my BCV points in those few months between DVC announcing details of Riviera and announcing their new draconian resale restriction. I had the BCV cash burning a hole in my pocket to buy DRR direct...and DVC decided I should buy BWV resale instead.
Here is my train of thought as the transfers now create a loophole in favor of resale owners. Prior to this if points were banked or borrowed and couldn’t be used only thing owners could do was rent. Now that banked & borrowed can be transferred owners have another option.
Currently I am looking at banking the next two years worth of points. For me at least this adds another opportunity - I don’t like renting and would much rather deal with another owner…I also appreciate the fact that it’s done through MS and IMO adds an extra level of confidence.
That would explain it. To me transfers are a PIA because you're not supposed to accept compensation and you only get one in *or* out per year (per membership). And over the years I've rented out unused points frequently enough that I basically think of them as cash.
I prefer to use our DVC points on DVC ressies because that means I'm using them to travel to Disney with my family...but if not the money goes to other things. Usually non-Disney travel with my family...;-)
