This hits hard! I’ve always been a big basketball fan and Bill was one of my all time favorites, on the court and off! He had so much energy and enthusiasm for basketball, music and just life in general. Bill was a joy to listen to on just about any subject. As a lifelong Boston Celtics fan, the 1986 championship team featuring Larry Bird, Danny Ainge, Dennis Johnson, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale is my favorite. Bill won the Sixth Man of the Year Award that season. Can you imagine? Bill Walton was a sub on that team. He relished his role and his unselfish play and leadership made that one of the best, if not the best, assist teams ever. Everyone on the team excelled in passing and would rather make a crisp pass to a teammate than score themselves. They were the epitome of a team.
I knew Bill had severe back problems several years ago but I don’t remember hearing that he had cancer. What a shame. This world needs more people like Bill Walton; caring, fun-loving, optimistic, full of love for the world and his fellow man. RIP Bill. You will be missed, but you will never be forgotten.
