This same story seems to come up every time a hurricane hits the Outer Banks. They were not created by nature to be built on. They are moving barrier islands designed to protect the inland shoreline from catastrophic damage. When you build on them you create catastrophic damage when a storm hits them. I love the Outer Banks, but they really aren't a place we should have physical structures unless we understand what will happen to them every few years and that getting to them can be difficult also after such storms.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to OBX this Summer...
including seeing the wild horses on the North-end, the
Wright Bros. Memorial, and ferries to and from Ocracoke.

Some advice: Do not feed the birds following the ferries.
They's land on nearby cars and poop all over them.
