Odd calls from "Marriott" for previews?

Twice in the last three months, I've gotten calls from "Marriott" offering preview stays at either "Newport Coast, Maui"??? or "Honolulu Marriott"??? resort.

The names are wrong and both times they have identified me an an owner on Maui (I'm not...)

Last I heard, the Newport Coast resort was still in Calif.

With all the phishing scams going around I thought I'd throw this one out there to see if anyone else is getting these. Wouldn't legit Marriott screeners have the correct owner information and the correct information of the resorts they are talking about?

Just curious, I'm going to try and contact Marriott to see if this is a legit offer or a scam using their name.

I would expect them to have correct information also. Let us know what you find out after you call.

I recently stayed at a Marriott during a business trip. About a week after I returned home, I received a call from Marriott. It was a sales call asking if I would like to go on a 3-day tour of "any of our fine Marriott Vacation Club Resorts". I asked them why they were calling and they told me it was because I had recently visited a Marriott hotel. I told the caller that I was already a multi-week Marriott owner, and he pretty much just hung up. I think they are probably including different avenues to get interest in possible sales. It sounds like the person that called you just had their reader card wrong.

New breed of lowlifes?

They are small in number, but I see a growing number of "entities" that "sell" Marriott preview tours at a profit. One occassionally sees this one EBay for example. I could envision a cold caller for such a firm being behind this one.

There was one guy on EBay a few years back who charged a $25 fee which covered his ad and overhead expenses, also charged the actual Marriott costs. His angle was to get TONS of referall credits.

Just when you thought you may know what lives under each rock in this industry, one finds a new rock to look under :D
