We are leaving for Oahu 12-2 staying at the HHV. We are not planning to move much but we are thinking of taking in the surfing competition on the north shore. Has anyone done that and any suggestions? :cheer: :wall: :whoopie:

Yes I have. The main things: check the local papers or the news. They only surf when the waves are big, it's not everyday. Do not leave things in the rental car at the North Shore. Bring a your beach mat to sit on. Don't forget suntan lotion and your camera. You will know when you are there, there will be tons of cars parked on the sides of the road.

On the weekends the traffic from Haleiwa is very heavy. After years of going from Honolulu (H1 to H2) then thru Haleiwa to the North Shore I hit upon the idea of going from the HHV over either the Pali or the LikeLike to Kailua then up to the North Shore. I found very little traffic this way plus you can stop at any of the many shrimp trucks for lunch plus when you arrive at the pipeline you are on the right side of the road for easier parking. This reverse route has worked well for us for the last couple of years.

We have been up to the north shore in the summer but not many large waves. Absolutly love the shrimp trucks. Thanks for the info.
