Norwegian cruise passenger gets flu, and $47,000 medical bill

  • Mike Cameron and his girlfriend won a free cruise to the Caribbean.
  • Cameron sought treatment on board for the flu.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line billed him $47,000 for the treatment.
The couple bought travel insurance from Norwegian that covered medical expenses up to $20,000. But they have not had luck filing a claim.
"The traveler’s insurance doesn’t want to pay it until we run it by our health insurance. The health insurance doesn’t want to pay it because it’s abroad," explained Masterman.

Cruise line health care is so scammy. After reading that I think I would never go to the cruise line medical center unless it was life or death. Then again, maybe checking the trip insurance would be better.

The issue of secondary insurance should be easy enough to clear up. Provide a copy of their medical insurance policy that indicates it deostn't cover care internationally. Or get a letter from their insurance company of the same.

As for reasonable costs, I don't know if $47K is reasonable for three days of treatment. It must have been severe enough that he had to be in the medical center 24/7? Ship doctors are usually independent contractors who bill for their own services. Our annual Geo-Blue policy will also provide a Guaranty of Payment to the medical provider. Though I don't know if that really means anything.

After 40+ years of T/S ownership, I am no longer "an owner"
Someone scheduled to be on my upcoming cruise next week was just talking about this reported $47k medical expense . . . and the reason why she cancelled because she's starting to feel ill 5 days before the trip.
