Instructions for installing free AVG 8 A/V without the link scanner:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9959582&postcount=61

Make sure you download the free A/V only, not the suite. Also, do a custom install and uncheck most of the other options (toolbars and any other scanning, except for email scanning.) Note: Please use common sense here. I don't remember all the options during the custom install.

Also, that thread has some other free A/V suggestions in it. I haven't personally tried any of the other ones.

I can't stress enough how much better eset nod32 is than any of the other options here.

David - my trial has now run out and I am ready to install the new s/w but on the site I see a free 30 day trial and the buy now version so I'm confused as to what you mean by downloading the free A/V only - do you mean the 30 day trial? Am I missing something?

Are you talking about AVG Free?

AVG Free A/V only is here: http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe

thanks - I think that's what I'm talking about  - but now I'm not sure that will be enough. Sounds like I should really go for the ESET Nod32 - is that correct? Though I will need to pay for it after the 30day trial. I'd rather not pay, but sounds like it's probably the better way to go? Oh, I forgot... I'm using Vista - it will work with Vista, right?

I recently dumped TrendMicro when it was time to renew. Like Norton, it's a once fine product that has succumbed to bloat.

It greatly slowed down my computer. I also despised how it would popup a window telling me that it was updating; I would often be in the middle of another task needing to focus intently, and all of a sudden TrendMicro would take over my screen. If I was in the middle of typing something, entering data, or writing code, too bad. Here's TrendMicro, thinking that whatever it is doing is more important than anything I might be doing.

Steve - Did you have the 2007 version? That was terrible. 2006 and now 2008 seem to be back to fast, reliable. I don't know how they screwed up 2007 so badly (but they did).

Steve - I've used Trend PC-Cillin for years and I've never noticed a popup telling me it's updating. I know it's updated as I can see the log that it was done. Matter of fact I never see any popups. Maybe there is a setting that you didn't click.

For speed, I don't notice any reduction at all. The only time it would impact my operation is when it is doing a major scan of the drives. I avoid that by scheduling any scan to occur during the 2:00am to 5:00am time frame.

I'm very satisfied with the product and my only challenge is how to beat the price. For the last three years I figured it out, so we'll see what happens on the next cycle.

You can use either one. It's up to you. Personally, IMO, nod32 is a great product and worth paying for.

If you end up using AVG free A/V, follow the instructions above and do the command line install.

Not sure why you think it isn't enough. A/V should just be A/V and nothing else. It's the other stuff many of the companies have started adding to it that have turned many of the products into bloatware. A good A/V will not allow you to run anything that is or contains a virus, and that's exactly what you want from an A/V only product.

An A/V only product will not stop you from getting spyware or other malware that isn't a virus, and it will also not act as a firewall. There are other good free products for those features if you want/need them.

I’ll keep paying the fifty bucks or so for Norton’s internet security. I’ll take the bloat and the extra few seconds to feel pretty secure with my internet surfing. It takes quite awhile for it to do a complete system anti-virus scan but I have it scheduled for early on Sunday mornings. I am not that confident in a free shareware to protect my computer.

Like you, I am quite happy to pay for a decent system but wouldn't touch Norton. Norton (paid version) let through trojans/virus/spyware onto my computer and all my efforts to quarantine and delete them using Norton failed. I have used AVG (paid version) for 12 months now and am very pleased with it.

I don't doubt that you feel secure using Norton. But feeling secure is not the same as actually being secure.

Here's an actual independent review site for A/V software. Most of the hits you will get by searching for a/v reviews are for magazines that benefit from advertising revenue and other sites that benefit from referral fees for the products they review.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/

Thanks much for this, David. I'm currently using AVG, and like you, am not happy with what they've done in 8.0.

From your site above, it looks to me like Avira has the best rating for percentage of viruses found. Plus it's rated fast with few false positives. And they have a free version. It seems to me that this would be a good one to try out. I've now downloaded it and plan to try it on my home desktop. Any thoughts on this one?

I haven't tried it, but that shouldn't discourage you from trying it. I know it's usually mentioned (along with Avast) as one of the remaining decent free products. If you try it, let us know what you think.
