That's a shame. I really loved his comedy. No matter how much money you have, health is something you cannot buy and cannot be guaranteed. Live your life to the fullest and don't worry about the little stuff. Travel more.

He had a nine year battle with cancer - makes me wonder what kind. To fight it that long, and then lose to it. Sad, for sure.

Here’s the audio of Colin Quinn the week he took over from Norm after Norm was let go. The ”Jeff” CQ refers to in the first 1:15 is Norm MacDonald. I remember thinking he was uncomfortable taking over, but really didn’t have much choice other than quiting in protest, but that probably wouldn’t have sat well with Norm.

My mothers neighbor just passed after a battle with lung cancer that was about the same length. I’d known her for seven of the nine years and until the last 3-4 months you would have never known she was sick. My own mom is 86 and headed to her final chemo treatment tomorrow. She’s responded well to it but it hasn’t been easy for her or my sister who has been her primary caretaker. She’s looking at a break of about a month and then 5 weeks of radiation. She’s been away from home for 6 months and is probably looking at at least 2 more. I’m hoping she’s back home in December to celebrate her 87th. It’s such a nasty disease, but great progress has been made in the treatments available. The nurses, doctors and other staff members have treated her so well too.

Prophetic:

In a 2011 comedy special, MacDonald said it was wrong to say you “lost your battle” with cancer when you died. “I’m not a doctor, but I’m pretty sure that if you die, the cancer also dies at exactly the same time,” he said. “That, to me, is not a loss. That’s a draw.”

I played poker with him briefly at the World Series of Poker two years ago. He has always been my favorite comedian.

Sorry, but this article cuts out the long middle of the joke which is what makes it great. Here’s the full original.

Hi Conan,

The video at the end of the article looks like the same one you posted. He was definitely a comic genius.

You’re right. The article starts by spoiling the punchline and I didn’t read past that.

The joke in full has a brutality to it (someone called it Dostoyevskian) that’s essential.

As to the Seth Meyers tribute I posted above, maybe the feelings weren’t entirely mutual.

MacDonald’s most famous clip has the same brutal honesty
