I'm doing a weekly "for fun" post. last week was decor/housing regrets. this week is:

Many of us have been to great, iconic places, exotic islands, etc. But, what's the most unexpectedly great place you've visited-as in something you either didn't know about, or had low expectations and it turned out awesome.

Mine: Guernsey in the Channels Islands. We were on a cruise. I said I didn't even care if we docked or not. We took a town bus to a little WWII "museum" in a small house with things collected on the island from the war. We happened to be standing near a tour guide (or we'd have missed this), who told of the small one paragraph newsletter that some with an illegal radio typed each day and townsfolk passed from house to house in secret, which went one for several years until the authors were ratted out. We were enthralled and then spent another hour re-examining things we'd quickly overlooked. The island is lovely and then, the icing on the cake was watching Guernsey Potato Peel movie on Netflix when we got back.
Runner up (humor)--some back road in SC that had a huge tinfoil "alien welcome station" in the yard.
Yours?

Easy! Nara, Japan. I loved everything about Nara. Nara was not on my "want to see" list when I went to Japan, but my daughter really wanted to go. It was magical. In traditional Shinto, deer are considered messengers of the Gods. I was transfixed by everything I saw there. I daydream about it all of time.

My daughter visited Nara last year! The deer BOW to you when you offer them a treat. I have video of the little deer bowing to her, and her bowing back, of course.

Some of the deer have moved into the city now, so the people who live there can see them from their windows.

I would say Shawnee in the Pocono's in late winter. We went last year just to get away. Figured the pool and gym would get us at least a good time. I was surprised how much we enjoyed the activities at the resort as well as getting out and hiking in the snow. While not the most exciting vacation we have taken I was actually shocked at how much fun we had. So much so that we went again this year the same week. It was during that week that it became apparent we were heading home to SIP. This year it was warm and to be honest we enjoyed the snowy cold the year before more.

I think Istanbul was magical and completely unexpected. It is my favorite city in Europe. We stayed at the Ciragan Palace Kempinski. They upgraded us to a larger room directly on the Bosphorus River with panoramic views where we watched the bridge change colors and saw fireworks nightly. The service was fabulous and we ate dinner nightly on our balcony after a day of sightseeing. The tourist attractions in Old Town are fabulous. The hotel is an Ottoman palace. The spa and pool were great too. I doubt I will ever make it to Istanbul again but I have such great memories of our trip there as well as to other parts of Turkey.

@wackymother Now that shaking hands is verboten, perhaps we need to adopt the tradition of bowing as a greeting.

We live in an area with many Asian neighbors, and lots of people actually do bow to people rather than shaking hands--we do sometimes too. I had to go to the bank right before we stopped going out, and the associate was Indian and we were joking around about doing our little namaste thing rather than shaking hands.

Yes, we like Shawnee too! Haven't been there in years, but they used to have a Friday-night sing-along party. The place was PACKED with older owners who lived locally and obviously all knew each other and did this every week. Some amazing voices!

We also like Villas at Fairway if we can get into one of the 3br units. They're pretty magnificent, and that resort also has nice activities. Very relaxing.

Greek Islands. When my DH and I were in our 20s we backpacked and took local ferries through the Greek Islands. Back then there was no GPS, no cell phones, and the "AirBnBs" were locals who would greet the ferry with cardboard signs and offer up rooms in town.

We got lost on one ferry and prematurely disembarked on the wrong island - I think it was Naxos. Never planned to stop there. Took a knuckle biting trip on a bus over a dirt road with an "AirBnB" host to a gorgeous, uninhabited white sand beach. The condo was spacious 2bdrm with marble floors for about $25 US per night. Enjoyed the beach, ate fresh fish and greek salad every day. We rented a car and toured the island visiting more authentic fishing villages and Greek culture. What a contrast from partying Mykonos and crowded Santorini and Rhodos.

We are glad we took this unexpected detour. I hope to return in the future with a GPS!

In 2006, I joined my brother, who was working on a project for Holiday Inn/Inter-Continental Hotels in London. He was going to do a side trip to Rome, so I flew to London and we did all the touristy things before going to Rome. Rome was amazing as I had expected. But when we flew back to London, we had one unscheduled day, so chose to go take the train to Cambridge. It was fun to go to a pub and watch the punting. The various universities there were beautiful and were built hundreds of years ago. I was also surprised to see so many bicycles near the train station when we walked into town. That was our best day of a 2 week trip. :)

When we bought our TS, it had a banked week. We spent it at Sunbay in Hot Springs AR. It was in May and the weather was great, we were right on the lake. We really liked the history of the area and the architecture of the old resorts.

There were some folksy tourist trap attractions, which we like. There were great restaurants. The scenery is beautiful.

If you like the area around Pigeon Forge or Branson without all the development, Hot Springs, AR is your place.

Near the sea.
Venice Florida. We were not Florida people. Miami once in the early 70s, Disney once in 1986. Started visiting friends on both coasts around 2011. Impulsively bought a house in Venice in 2013 and moved it. It’s beautiful when the snowbirds go north.

Seoul, South Korea. We went there to enjoy a shopping trip but were pleasantly surprised there was so much else to see and do. The DMZ tour and Palace tour were amazing and we learned so much about the history and the people of South Korea. They love Americans and continue to show their children how lucky they are to have been saved from the attack by North Korea. They have two museums that are excellent and world class. The shopping was everything we expected. It is a modern city and the economy is booming. We spent seven days in Seoul and would love to go back to see more of the country.

Without a doubt, Cameron House Hotel Resort and Spa in Loch Lomond, Scotland.

(Please enjoy the story with me as I reminisce.)

In short, we were blown away!
Below was our FIRST impression, as the Bagpiper welcomed us as we drove up all alone to the guest entrance.
Imagine the look on our faces, and we all had goose bumps. We jumped out of the car and just listened.
Our children were 15 & 12 at the time.

The Timeshare Cottages, which are 2 stories, are located immediately adjacent to the historic grand old luxury hotel.
Both the hotel and the cottages are to die for. There are also 1 and 3BR retail cottages. There are a bunch of them....dozens.
All cottages are elegantly and comfortably appointed, including many with a large 2nd story deck balcony,
which the timeshare 2-story ones have.
It's such a beautiful and lovely loch-side property with stunning grounds, and you can actually see an old castle on the other side of the loch.
We TRADED in using an Interval International "request first" search for a June/July/August week.....we got July.

The indoor pool complex in the hotel is one of the nicest I've ever seen.

Cameron House also serves as a great home base
for traveling east to St. Andrews, the birthplace of golf, or to many historic towns around central Scotland including
Stirling & the beautiful Stirling Castle. The surrounding countryside scenery is breathtaking.
You can also travel north to see the entire expanse of the loch, which is 24 gorgeous miles long, or beyond to visit the west coast towns,
including the quaint little town of Oban, and farther north still to the Isle of Skye, a visual paradise with
the most stunning vistas we've ever seen.

The golf course where the annual Scottish Open used to be played is down the road from Cameron House, but very close.
We visited during July several years ago,
and most of the professional tournament golfers stayed in the grand old hotel, and we saw them frequently as they dined and hung out.
From Cameron House, where we spent a week, we drove over 1000 miles around Scotland for sightseeing, and at the end of the week
moved to the grand old historic Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh for another week, where JK Rowling spent a long time holed up
while writing her final book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows.
What a trip----probably the best, most interesting, and most beautiful trip we ever made, and that includes some great ones!

A lasting memory, you ask?
At each accommodation it was unanimous for me, wife, 2 children:
For Cameron House: it was our DAILY mid-morning hour on the bar lounge sofas,
enjoying hot tea and scones and talking together as a family while overlooking the loch through the huge picture window.
..........seems to always be the simple things.
For Balmoral Hotel: it was experiencing a "special room"...If you look carefully at this picture link below, you'll see
near each top corner of the hotel (here, under the Clock Tower) there is a large shingled dome,
and extending from the dome there is a small triangular dormer with a small circular window just below it.
That happens to be one of the few "roof-line rooms"----- btw, the circular window is just above waist height.
(The big double-arched windows seen in the picture were part of the room below us.)
The circular window rooms however were actually part of the dome (the dome was our ceiling) so we had one of the hotel's 4 cathedral ceilings.
You can't see from the scale, but the circular window was quite large, about 3 feet in diameter, and extended in a tube-like fashion out from the room,
such that an adult could literally crawl easily up from the room into the area with the window at the end, and open the window.
There was enough space for two people to sit comfortably there in the smooth barrel-shaped space to enjoy...
The length of the "tube" space from the room wall to the window at the end of the "tube" was about 4-5 feet.
.....a great visual spot out the window, a neat reading spot, or a quirky conversation spot.
The room was quirky being in a dome, but charming and amazing.
One night after dinner we saw a bunch of beaming search lights of different colors emanating from the grounds of Edinburgh Castle
about a 1/4 mile away, and we clearly heard singing even from that distance. Looked at first like a light show.....
After a minute we realized it was unmistakably Tom Jones performing an outdoor concert from Edinburgh Castle atop Castlehill.
We left the window open and listened to the whole thing. Pretty cool.

The COST?
Accommodations: week at Cameron House was one trade week's maintenance fee,
week at Balmoral Hotel Edinburgh was a retail add-on for 7 nights (we got a deal including a gracious unexpected upgrade),
but absolutely a once-in-a-lifetime experience worth every penny in one of the world's great cities,
4 airline tickets using FF air miles, rental car, excursion tickets for castles, etc, and food. One amazing trip.

Pittsburgh. I went there for a wedding and didn't expect much. Went to a baseball game and did a lot of sightseeing. It has a great vibe, and a lot of the steel industry rust and fade has been redone into retail and restaurants. The ball field is one of my favorites with a great view of the downtown sky line. Another one that was very similar is Milwaukee. Absolutely no expectations there, and again, great history, cool architecture and on the water.

St Paul's Cathedral. I was on a work trip visiting a customer in London in the late '90s. I had Sunday morning to myself and was out walking around and happened upon the church. I peeked inside and mass was just about to begin. Not being overly religious, I decided to take a seat anyways when asked if I wanted to come in. I remember the choir and music were so wonderful. Being in that place at that time was a complete accident, but still sticks with me as one of the high points of the trip.

Ibiza and (especially) Formentera a ferry ride away.
We almost didn't go because of its bad reputation (tourist trap? druggy/drunk party island?) but we loved the beaches, the food, the scenery, and the rest.
