I had flown in and out of Idaho Falls many times before my flight to Kona. As the plane was landing I was thinking about how similar the lava fields were at both airports.

If you're traversing southern Idaho between Idaho Falls and Boise (perhaps on your way to Island Park or West Yellowstone), consider taking US Hwy 20 across the Camas Prairie and the Arco Desert. It's a much more scenic route, and it takes you past the Visitor Center at Craters of the Moon.

As with any high altitude arid area, don't underestimate your need for water. You lose large amounts of water through your lungs. Because they are not sweating, many people don't worry about water loss. But you lose water with every breath you take.
