Hi everyone,

I'm a new member from Australia and have already learned a lot from reading through the Marriott Vacation Club discussions. I'm hoping to get some advice from members who know Newport Coast Villas well.

My family (two dads and our two boys, aged 3 and 7) will be visiting Southern California for the first time in late September 2026. After researching a number of accommodation options, we've narrowed our search to Marriott's Newport Coast Villas, which seems like the ideal home base while we visit Disneyland, LEGOLAND and explore Orange County.

Our travel dates are 24 September – 1 October 2026 (Thursday to Thursday).

The Thursday arrival is what's making this a little tricky.

At the moment, I've booked the first two nights directly with Marriott (Thursday and Friday), which remains fully refundable while I work through the best overall strategy. I've also been researching owner rentals through RedWeek, Koala and Vakaymood for the remaining five nights.

Most owner reservations, however, begin on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, so I'm trying to work out the smartest approach before locking anything in.

I'd really appreciate some advice from those with experience at Newport Coast Villas:
  • Have any of you successfully combined a Marriott reservation with an owner reservation? If so, how did the resort handle linking the reservations?
  • In your experience, how common is it for guests to remain in the same villa when reservations are linked?
  • Are there particular buildings or locations within the resort that you would recommend for a family with young children (3 and 7)?
  • Are most villas now renovated, or are there still significant differences between buildings?
  • Is there anything else you wish you'd known before your first stay at Newport Coast Villas?
And finally, I'd love your opinion on the booking strategy itself.

If you were in my position, would you:

A)
Keep the two-night Marriott booking and continue looking for a five-night owner rental,

B) Book the entire stay directly through Marriott for simplicity, or

C) Take a completely different approach?

I'd really appreciate hearing the reasoning behind your recommendation!!

Thanks very much in advance. One thing that's already become clear from reading these forums is just how knowledgeable and generous the Marriott owner community is, and I'm very grateful for any advice you're willing to share.

Michael

You could go to www.vacationpointexchange.com
and see if somebody renting points would be willing to book a Thursday-Thursday points resy for you.
Thanks so much for the suggestion - I hadn't considered renting Destination Points instead of a traditional week.

Have you (or anyone else here) had experience doing this at Newport Coast Villas for non-traditional arrival dates like Thursday-Thursday?

It sounds like it could solve the biggest challenge we're facing, so I'd be interested to hear how straightforward the process is and whether there are any pitfalls to be aware of.

Thanks again!

NCV only sold weeks with Fri/sat/sun checkins. So the only way to do a thur-thur would be points (or cash thru Marriott which is $$$$).

Honestly your best approach may be a single night reservation for Thursday and then book an owner week that is Friday to Friday and just request to have them linked so you can stay in the same villa.

Ah great intel, thank you!

Why wouldn't you stay near Disneyland when you are visiting there and near Legoland when you are there. Otherwise you are going to be wasting too much time in the car.

NCV is not a bad drive to Disneyland at all. I have stayed there twice for Disneyland trips. Now if you are wanting to do Universal Studios or Magic Mountain or anything that far away its definitely a trek in LA traffic from NCV.

55 is backed up all day long. Plus parking at the Disneyland parking structures and taking the shuttle buses eat up valuable vacation time.

Back to the question about the strategy. I wouldn't use points for only part of the trip, especially if it involved using them on the weekend nights (terrible value). I personally would look for a Friday to Friday weeks stay and then pay cash or Bonvoy points to stay Thursday night. There are a lot of Marriott hotels near NCV. Some are very expensive, but others a lot more reasonable. Even though I don't agree with TolmiePeak's comments, they aren't wrong either. Southern California traffic is no joke, and there aren't good options otherwise. The farther north you go up the coast, the worse it gets until you are quite a bit north of LA. Definitely get a rental car with a transponder that allows you to use the toll and HOV lanes. There shouldn't be much traffic going to Lego Land.

Because those days are literally like 20% of my trip - so there's no need to base myself in Anaheim when we can have a great SoCal experience and only be 20-30 mins away. I am visiting the parks on low-peak days. I'm from Sydney So I'm very used to traffic.

What time do you arrive at LAX on Thursday and what time does your flight leave?

20 to 30 minutes? It will take you a minimum of 30 minutes from the time you turn into the parking lot until you get to Disneyland. Both lots require you to take a shuttle or walk. The parking lots are not next to Disneyland.

That's fine - I'm cool with that but thanks for your intel

Super grateful for this advice - I definitely will - thank you so much! Really appreciate it.

Look into the toll pass so you can save time by using the 73 toll road freeway to save time.

Early morning flight at LAX on Thursday, and flight also departs in the morning the following week :)

I go to Newport Coast twice a year. It is great. There is a lot to do at the resort and also in that area. There are numerous pools at the NCV including some that are especially kid friendly. Take your kids down to Crystal Cove (Pacific Ocean) - - it is very near. The Marriott shuttle will drop you off and then pick you on an hourly schedule. There is a nice restaurant down there.
