OK. I am new to RCI and have been looking for one of those cheap last minute deals. I saw a week that was 7500 points and thought, wow, this week is only going to cost me less than $100 (value of points). I go to book it and see that RCI is going to charge me $164 for the privilege. I guess I missed that part of the users manual.

This means that those super deals are only good deals. Is this the way it works? If so, I guess I've learned my lesson and will adjust accordingly. Any other surprises for those of us too naive to pay attention to the owners manual?

Thanks BR

The $164 is the basic exchange fee to reserve one of the "weeks" resorts, regardless of whether or not it is 7500 pts or 50,000 pts. For $164 and the value of your points (under $300), it's still a great deal.

Be aware though that RCI has fees for everything. Just wait until you want to book a unit for 1 or 2 nights. There is an exchange fee of $39 or $59, and then you may get hit with a "cleaning" fee by the resort since you are staying less than 7 nights. Add in the "value" of your points, and it might cheaper to get a hotel room if the stay is just for two or three people.
