Newbie asking about Marriott TS

Hello all, :wave:

This is my first time here and timeshares are a new avenue for me.
I have been talking with a rep from Marriott regarding buying a timeshare. I've been almost all over the BB and have found it very helpful. I'm thinking of buying a TS at the Manor Club in Williamsburg for $10,900 in Silver season. My questions are: is that too much to spend on my first timeshare? Would I do better buying online (Ebay) and do I still reap the Marriott Rewards points if I don't buy through Marriott. I've never bought a timeshare or been to one, although I think I would like it.

Oh, btw, I saw a post the other day from someone who is going to Asheville, NC soon. I'll be going there myself 1 - 6 Oct. I'm really looking forward to it. Thanks for the info.

Hi Lynn,
You can most likely get a Platinum season week at Manor Club for the same price on the resale market. If silver season is what you want, you can save even more on resale.

You do not get any points for the purchase if buying resale, and you do not have the option of exchanging for points if you buy resale. There is a lot of info about Marriott specifics on the sticky thread at the top of the Marriott Resort System forum on this site.

Also, there are 2 different Manor Club resorts, manor club original and manor club sequel. The sequel resort has a lock off feature where you can divide a 2bdrm unit into 2 separate units (1bdrm and studio) to exchange individually or use separately for 2 separate weeks. I also looked at manor club but decided to buy grande vista platinum due to our 2 young kids who loves disneyworld.

Please make sure you know what season you really want b/c with a silver manor club your chance of trading into some of desirable resorts (beach, hawaii, carribean) during peak seasons are slim. Off-seasons should be ok though.

Yes, It is too much. If you buy resale, you don't get the right to exchange for Marriott Rewards Points, but you probably don't get that many for a Silver week, and there are other ways to get points. Exchanging for points is generally not cost effective, but there are still some fans. You can buy a Platinum week resale at Manor Club for a least a couple of thousand less than your were quoted for Silver. A Platinum Sequel will be a little more.

Please read the boards here for a couple of months at least before you buy anything. Also, the only disadvantage with buying resale is you can't trade in for points, which I would never do anyway. It's not usually a great value. With the thousands of $$$ you would save buying resale, you can afford to stay in a few hotel rooms from time to time!

Do lots of research then buy resale only!

Another Silver MMC in the older section of the resort sold on eBay in July for under $500.

Save your money and buy resale. Better yet, if you buy resale you can get Platinum at MMC, and still pay far less than what you mentioned the developer wants for a Silver week.

Manor Club is one of our all-time favorite resorts, so I highly recommend it...but not necessarily at developer prices.

If you are considering Silver because the salesman told you it is cheaper and you can exchange it easily for all the other Marriotts, please rethink your purchase. Technically, it is possible to exchange a Silver Manor Club week for even a prime time Hawaii, Aruba or ski week, BUT it is VERY unlikely that you will get the exchange outside of Flexchange (last minute exchanges 59 days or less before travel). Silver Manor Club weeks will generally be weaker traders and will pull off-season or less desirable weeks.

If, however, you want to go to Williamsburg during Silver season weeks and/or have a lot of flexibility and don't mind off-season travel and last minute reservations, then it can work well for you even as a trader.

Read the stickies on the top of the forum, stick around here for awhile and feel free to ask lots of questions- before buying.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I was thinking Manor Club silver basically because of the price fits into my price range for my first timeshare. The rep also said they only had silver season available. Now I talked to a good friend of mine at work today and she has one for sale at Surfwatch for $25K. That's more than I was willing to pay, but it is on the ocean in HH where I wanted to buy in the first place. I wanted to buy in HH but I just thought it was over-priced. Maybe not. I wanted to reap the Marriott Rewards too. I think what I will do is rent a vacation timeshare to see if I like the resort and then make my purchase next year. I think that's probably in my best interest. Obviously, I have lots to learn and you all will educate a beginner.

Don't rush into buying anything. You will be in so much better shape to make an informed buying decision by frequenting this board and following resales on ebay (but not bidding) for the next few months (at least).
