From the small bit of the article I was able to read, it seems that the property where the vacation club is sold is a Hyatt hotel. Doesn't seem to be related in any way to Marriott Vacations Worldwide or Hyatt Vacation Club in any way. This is how many of the all inclusive properties sell vacation clubs or timeshares in Mexico. People who go to the Hard Rock Hotel in Cancun can buy into their membership program, but I understand that program is actually sold and backed by Palace Resorts.

That's an odd product.

I keep thinking Universal is going to start really selling timeshares like Disney did. The thing is, look around while at Universal, and you see a different crowd, and you won't see many little kids. Universal isn't for young families. This is my primary complaint about the company, yet our kids insist on taking their kids along with only a small roller coaster, ET, and two Seuss rides.

Cat in the Hat is way too wild for really little ones. Even the goofy little tram ride in the Seuss area is not for little ones because of the lap bar.

Our granddaughter is 7 and loves roller coasters. She still cannot ride any of the big coasters. The Hippogriff is not exciting enough.

This is Unlimited Vacation Club, has nothing to do with Universal. The article says it is managed, but not owned, by Hyatt. Didn't follow the public document s link but I suppose that's Hyatt hotels and resorts, not the TS brand owned by MVWC.

But Hard Rock is at Universal, so I guess that was my assumption. I assumed incorrectly. I could only see the first few sentences of the article.

I don't know where Universal comes in, or if an older crowd makes it more relevant for timeshare sales, but I think the UVC potentially sounds like a club you can just leave whenever (assuming you paid it off) - sort of where some thing Timeshares have to go. That said, it also sounds like a bad deal (is there a membership fee ongoing?) because of the high upfront price, and the benefit being 25% off. Doesn't really seem that good for any upfront purchase price - maybe $1,000? Made worse by being what I call "a bad points program" like Airline miles - having blackout dates and 2 for 1 costs for free nights at "some locations" all are red flags to be a rewards or saving or points program I'd avoid.

If there's any ongoing fees I'd want to see much higher discounts - then again, I'm also confused by the article that says the person got a $6,000 expedia trip for $2,400. So what is the actual pricing?

Also, maybe I'm spoiled by TS and points pricing but $2,400 for a single week is very near the highest I'd pay, and really noticeably more than my average. Even HGVC weeks tend to run me $1,700 at most. But maybe it would get you better locations? It wasn't clear if the pitch was hotel rooms, or timeshares, or something else entirely (tied to the Secrets brand maybe?). All I know is that sort of trip seems too rich for my blood to want to commit to doing yearly to use my vacation club. And certainly not for $27,000 up front.

From what I can tell - it sounds like an expensive version of priceline or something - which just doesn't seem like a good deal.

$27K for a bunch of lies.

I would be shocked by the price, but I have seen some crazy prices offered to us recently by Marriott. Marriott gets $300K+ for what we currently own in Abound points. At first I thought, "that is not much money," but I did the quick math on my calculator after hearing the price. We were grandfathered into Chairman's Club for $80K, quite by accident. Of course, Marriott is an actual product that I trust.

Thanks for the link to the article.

I think of all of the stupid Wyndham owners who buy after seeing one fantastic resort and then use their points for the average resorts out there that aren't the caliber of the one they bought into. Same thing as buying into a "club" and finding out you aren't going to get what you thought.

I can see Disney Vacation Club getting some questions about this, even though until the Cabins at Fort Wilderness came along the ads and documents made clear that we were buying “a real estate interest” (CFW is in a trust).

The Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando is operated by Loews Hotels and Resorts. In fact, I understand that they manage and operate all the hotels that are associated with Universal Orlando.

Brian, thanks for highlighting and posting this article. We joined the Unlimited Vacation Club last year during a trip to Cancun. So far we are very satisfied with the “club” and have taken several vacations with many more booked over the coming year.

Just to explain a couple of things about the properties included in the program. These are all-inclusive resorts such as Secrets (adults only), Dreams (families) and other affiliated brands of similar quality. These are not “Club Med” type party hotels. These are nice resort hotels in desirable vacation areas and are not timeshares. The other guests we’ve met are all nice, respectful people similar to us. The properties offer a variety of room and suite options but they are hotel room type accommodations, not villas like timeshares.

The properties offer various restaurants, bars, social clubs, swimming pools and beach areas on premises which are included with every stay. Yes, there are certain restaurants and facilities that are included for higher level members or at an additional charge for members not at those levels. The Preferred level that we are members of includes most every on-site benefit including private pool areas.

As for the “value” of the membership, it is dependent on how you use it and what your needs/ expectations are from a vacation. We have / will save thousands of $$ from the normal rates these resorts charge by using our free premier nights and discounted rates. Some resorts, as mentioned in the article are 2 for 1 using the free nights, but they often run sales of 1 for 1 rates at those resorts and they always advise when a resort will increase to 2 for 1 in the future.

For example, UVC is building a new Secrets resort by Baby Beach in Aruba, planned to open next spring. They started taking reservations recently at 1 to 1 for this resort that will be 2 for 1 once opened. We booked a week there for a year from now using free nights at 1 for 1.

We are taking our family (married daughters, husbands and our grandkids) to Cancun over Presidents week this coming February. We used our free Premier nights for 3 rooms for this trip to Dreams Vista Cancun. We are only paying for airfare ( which is pricey for that week). I haven’t even checked what the resort price would have been if paying $$.

The one thing I can say about the resorts we have stayed in so far is that the service is outstanding, the staffs are friendly and accommodating and go out of their way to make sure your stay is awesome. They always upgrade us to the highest level preferred rooms available some of which include dedicated butler service. The restaurants are excellent with various cuisines including steakhouses, sushi and hibachi as well as Mexican and other specialties. We have never paid extra for food or drinks. They also have coffee shops with snacks available 24 hours a day, all included.

This type of vacation may not be for everyone. We are long time Marriott Vacation Club owners and have enjoyed vacations in larger villa accommodations when our kids were younger (and still do with our grandkids as we are leaving for Aruba on Saturday) at locations like Orlando, Hilton Head and other US vacation areas. We were looking to enjoy different types of vacations such as Secrets, adults only with friends. Although the club buy-in is pricey, I don’t stress about increasing annual maintenance fees for my real estate “ownership” as that season is now coming with MVC.

I enjoyed the article especially as I was looking over UVC just a few weeks ago. We are very Hyatt owners; however, no international travel which is why I looked at UVC. If i thought it would work as well as Hyatt and as fairly, we would be in; however, the article raises some doubts about the program which is a shame as the resorts look wonderful. Having said that, we're not really AI type of people which is why I hesitated.

Yea, every AI I've ever looked at was just insane vs just paying for food wherever. I think the issue is we generally have 0-1 person out of a party of 2-5 that drinks a bit of Whisky. A 750ml bottle lasts close to the week, and even splurging, that's like 1 $250 bottle. Going "cheap" it can be like $70. Most of these places seem to assume you're going to eat and drink like 4 meals and 10 drinks a day at bar rates before you break even. The places all look nice, but when I could book a normal hotel and eat out myself for like 1/5 to 1/3 the AI price... getting 25% off doesn't do it for me.

I didn't realize you could resale these vacation clubs. How did that work? Are there yearly fees? For a a buck (or even $100) I'd probably try it out just for fun lol. See if I did match anything cheap enough to go lol.

What are the guarantees with this club? With all the timeshares there is some sort of guarantee - even in the trust programs.

What contractually guarantees the math will end up in your favor with this arrangement?

I think most folks discover very few legitimate guarantees written in a contract....vs plenty mentioned during a sales presentation!
