Roger that; I was kind of hoping for something that went out a bit more than one month. Nothing in this that would tempt me to book something this coming month; if they ran similar discounts through next March, though....

Looks like they have to many vacant rooms and VIP benefits being offered to everyone.

Gotta disagree with that because it's plainly not true. There is a targeted sale of some resorts/unit types that have occupancy below what Wyndham wants; the sale prices are offered to all Wyndham users. VIP benefits don't exclude specific resorts or unit types within specific resorts. This is an inventory/occupancy management effort on Wyndham's part, but isn't offering VIP benefits to everyone; there are a lot of the VIP benefits that don't apply here and the time period is much shorter than the VIP discount window. In effect, this sale is not as good as the VIPP benefits, which would allow a 50% discount on any reservation in a longer window than just August 2020 and could come with a unit size or quality upgrade.

No but in reality, they have to get rid of some 2020 points, a lot of 2020 points. If they don't VIPP is going to get hit hard next year and the year after.

I stand corrected. The targeted sale of some resorts or some unit types diminishes the value of VIP benefits when any discounts are passed along to non VIP or resale owners. Resale owners can travel for less if they have the flexibility to travel when Wyndham discounts available rooms. IMHO You can also rent for less from a VIP on most occasions.

That is certainly a point of view one could take. IMHO, however, the reality of the situation is likely that the reason there is a targeted sale of some resorts is that there is a reservation rate reflecting a low occupancy at those resorts and Wyndham does not believe that the potential demand from VIPs for lower cost reservations in the discount window of 60 days will make up for it. Of particular note with this sale is the fact that it was offered on July 30th and runs for stays through August 31st, which is well within the 60-day VIP discount window, and the discount rate is no more than a VIPP would get for all resorts (VIPG or VIPS for some). I don't believe that it diminishes the value of my VIPG benefits in the current situation as (1) I am not in the market for a reservation at any particular resort right now, (2) I generally make adjustments to my reservations at the 60-day point when the discount window opens for me or the 45-day window when the VIPG upgrade window opens, and (3) I try to avoid being paranoid about attributing spiteful motivations to corporations for actions that are easily explained by an interpretation that relies on enlightened self-interest of the corporation in its economic welfare and survival.

Rather than looking at this sale as Wyndham pulling the rug out from under my investment in my VIP benefits, I look at it as a beneficial thing that might motivate non-VIP or resale owners to actually use their points in August of this year. That would actually improve my VIP benefits overall because a reduction in available points competing for reservations next year would potentially result in more opportunities for upgrades or discounts when those windows open up. If you look at the situation we are in, (1) there has been a reduction in the use of points for reservations due to the public health emergency (PHE) that amounts to going from a 90% occupancy rate to a 60% occupancy per the 2nd quarter earnings report referenced in a different thread, (2) Wyndham has recognized that all of its owners are affected by the PHE and allowed them to shift their points to the next year or year after, which is fair IMHO because this ability shouldn't depend on something random like when one's use year starts, which (3) means that there will be a concomitant rise in the number of points competing for the same number of potential stays next year or the year after. Wyndham seems to have taken some action to alleviate the situation by deciding to make some of their rental inventory available to owners to book with points - again, seen through the lens of enlightened self-interest of the corporation this is likely in recognition that one of their major sources of income, the sale of additional points to existing owners, is dependent on those owners being satisfied with their ownership. Of course, the rental side of the business is a source of income (though I'm not sure how it compares to sales), but one that doesn't result in an ongoing cash flow as is the case with sales. If you take the time to think about what the motivation of the other parties to a set of transactions could be, you'll find it is seldom just to screw the other guy. I think this is particularly the case with the hospitality industry, although there are some issues on the sales side of things.

Agree 100%. If there were something out there in August that I wanted, I'd already have it.

Wyndham's sale doesn't bother me a bit as a VIPP owner. I've already scoured August availability at resorts that I concentrate on. If I wanted something in August, I booked it in June with a 50% discount and an upgrade. If no upgrade was available, I didn't book it. I've already worked over September.

Actually, I've been cancelling August reservations that aren't selling to free up points to book in September. (As usual, my points balance is zero.)

Edit: I should add that I haven't looked closely at the list of resorts Wyndham is discounting but I wonder how many of them are in coronavirus hotspots. Cut the price and some people might be willing to accept the risk.

Surprisingly. there is only one in FL that is 50% off. 2 in FL where you can get 40%. Many of the 50% off is in SC and CA.

So, maybe people haven't been scared off at one hot spot but maybe have been at two others.

Hard to figure.

Or maybe they usually have low capacity this time of year and they are trying to fill some beds?

If they have low capacity (as, for example, they have taken units out of service for refurb), I'd think they would be full.

If it's low demand and they're trying to fill beds, then why is demand low? Could be coronavirus jitters or it could be that Florida and the Southeast kind of suck in August.

I'm not sure they are at reduced capacity anymore. At least, not all of them.

Well, neither am I but it was your idea.

Actually, it's probably a good time to accomplish some projects.

I was confused for a second. I see where you are getting that. I used the wrong word. I meant that they are not as full because it’s not a busy time for them.
