Hello,

Newbie here, just signed up for 1,000 mvc points at 25% discount with 2,000 bonus points and a free week rental. Have always stayed at Marriotts and thought it would be a good idea to enroll. Just wanted feedback/advise from other point owners to maximize usage. Thanks

Do you own Marriott weeks that are enrolled? 1000 points won't get you very much. Perhaps only a few days here or there. Rarely a full week anywhere unless it is Hilton Head in the winter or other off season locations.

It isn't the worst deal we've seen here; OP probably paid about $7.50pp (I'm estimating $9.20 less the one time points and free nights). It can be done for about $5pp by purchasing resale points for about $2pp and then paying Marriott's extortionate enrollment fee of $3pp.

OP's problem, as noted, is that 1000 points doesn't go far. The answer is -- as OP suggests later -- to rent points. Less capital tied up that way. It's not a bad approach, although depending on the resorts and seasons OP wants, it may be difficult to get reservations 12 months in advance (because higher point status members can reserve at 13 months).

Why are you estimating 9.20 per pt? I thought you needed a larger point purchase to get that low.

They were willing to sell us 1K points at 9.20 back in June when we were at Grande Vista. Because of COVID they had rolled back the pricing to 2010 prices. In other words, they were desperate.

On Aug 5th we were offered $10.18 for a 3000-DCP purchase [~$30K].
This was discounted from the current price of $14.54 [30%-Discount].

However, the price is higher if one wanted to purchase less than 3K-DCP.

Hybrid-Purchase Option
We could have lowered the price with a Hybrid-Purchase [DCP + WEEK].
The only week being offered was at Grande Vista, Orlando [which we didn't want].
The price for the week was $7400 for 2175-DCP or $3.40/DCP.

The hybrid cost was ~$38K for 5175-DCP [3000 + 2175] which works out to $7.33/DCP.

Incentive
2 x 3000-DCP packages valid for 2-Years [end of 2022] worth about $3600.
This lowered the final price to about $6.78/DCP.
