According to an article in today's Oregonian newspaper, Wyndham Worldwide and Opus Northwest are under contract to buy a site in the Pearl District of downtown Portland to build a 115 room timeshare. They hope to break ground in April or May of 2009 and complete construction in August of 2010. The property is on the corner of Northwest Irving Street between 14th and
15th.

I hope this happens. This is a great location in downtown, very walkable, with a lot of attractions close by.

Portland is one of the places we have on our possible retirement, but we haven't actually been there yet.

I like the city. However, be prepared for many rainy & cloudy days. Some people can't handle it.

I like the idea a t/s in Portland. It will be very popular.

I think Portland is a lovely city.

But having said that, I have lived in Vancouver, BC, Seattle and Portland, and Portland was the coldest because of the wind from the Columbia River.

But it still is a very pleasant city, especially in the Spring through Fall, but you do need to be prepared for rain even in the summer in the NorthWet Coast! :)

A t/s in downtown Portland? Wow...rather go to the Whispering Wind or whatever it's called in Welches, which is near Mt Hood.

Wouldn't expect much quiet time on 14th/15th avenues though.

Here's a little more info, including a few drawings of the proposed project.

The blogs have also started.

Winter in downtown Portland is no treat, but I guess sun-sensitive people need a place to vacation too.

Wow, that video reminded me of a winter I spent there. It was like the worst ice storm Portland had had in a long long time. Cars couldn't go anywhere.

As I remember Portland seems to get more snow and ice than Seattle, but I could be wrong.

But it still is a very very nice city. :)

Wow, I guess if we're retired we at least have more options of just staying home! We need to spend some time there, both winter and summer, to see if it's a place we are interested in.

I seem to remember at one time you were interested in Ashland/Medford.

I think you would find the weather there to be more "California". type weather, though I think they are still cold in the winter, but it is drier than Portland in Southern Oregon..

But Portland is still a great place to live! :)

Still considering Ashland, but the additional cost and time to travel, (as opposed to Portland with Southwest) and the distance from the ocean are major hesitations. The cost of condos in that retirement community in Ashland are also much higher than Portland. I think I'm suffering from internal backlash of being in a lovely vacation spot for 23 years now, but wanting to have public transportation, access to a swimming pool, movies, shopping, shows etc.

Liz,

That video clip of all the cars sliding downhill in an ice storm and crashing into each other is NOT a typical Portland winter day. That was an exceptional winter, and an exceptional ice storm. Sometimes several winters go by with no snow at all.

I remember a January several years ago whem my sister in the midwest called to tell us the temp had not been above zero in weeks. We were having an very mild stretch of weather, it was 60 degrees and we were heading for the beach for the week-end. I just did not have the heart to tell her our plans!

Yes, there are a lot of grey and rainy days here. You should check out Portland in the winter for sure if you are thinking about retiring there. Alot of people who were not born and raised here just can't take the grey winters.

My in-laws sold their house to a woman from So-Cal who looked at their house in the fall and moved in in mid December. Six weeks later she put the house back on the market and fled back south. December does have the shortest hours of daylight in the year and she was newly widowed, which might have had more than a lot to do with her short lived stay here.

Just FYI.

Gayle

P.S. Have you looked into Bend, Oregon? Lots of blue sky on that side of the Cascades.

I've heard great things about Bend, but again, I want easy access to public transportation and a major airport.
