It is next door to shell Kauai coast... it will better than all the homeless folk that hang out there. It used to be a good place to walk but the last few times, it has been somewhat uncomfortable.

Any one know what happened to the plans to tear down the derelict buildings/hotel/resort that have been sitting empty since Iniki on the south end of Kapa'a?

This is the Coconut Palms - they are supposedly rebuilding it from the original steel framing. However, an article that I just read said that the project is still bogged down in a tangle of funding and legal problems.

The Coconut Palm restoration is a different project.

From https://www.hawaiibusiness.com/coco-palms/
The hotel project, a $135 million effort led by Tyler Greene and Chad Waters of Coco Palms Hui LLC, is on its way to reopening in 2019 as part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection. The plan is to rebuild the hotel with 350 rooms, 12,000 square feet of retail, three restaurants and a cultural center.

Winner winner, chicken dinner!!!! Good detective work.
Strange though as we have not been told this in any owner updates. I would think that would be the 1st thing a salesman would say

This article states that it is the Coconut Beach Resort. This is different than the Coco Palms restoration project that is across the highway from the beach and further south, closer to the Wailua river. The Coconut Beach Resort is a new resort being proposed to be constructed between the Marriott Courtyard and the Beach Boy resort. The developers are Coconut Beach Development. Slightly more than 340 multi-family units are proposed to be developed. This is at a time when there are already too many people on Kauai at any one time. There is no proposed development to increase the infrastructure to accommodate an already overcrowded island. Instead, the local government is proposing to limit individuals from renting their property in a public effort to show that they are trying to do something about the overcrowding.

It is the Coco Palms, not the Coconut Palms, and it was one of the most famous of the early iconic Hawaiian resorts. We stayed there on our honeymoon in 1973 and it was a marvelous place. It still has a following hoping the restoration works out, although each year fewer and fewer people remember its heyday.
