The key is the equalization curves they use when they cut the music to different media. When CDs first came out, many companies just took the old music from the master tapes and cut them to CDs without changing the equalization to match the response of CDs which led to the arguments that "vinyl sounded better than digital". In reality, they needed to be remastered.

There are/were companies that recognized the difference, like Deutsche Grammophon, that took the time to do it right for each media format.
