I ran across a reference to this recently. I find the regulation very difficult to understand ... like what is a USDA-accredited veterinarian -- is that someone special, or is your local vet likely to be one? There are three different forms you might need, depending on circumstances. I am sure airlines will be on top of this, but I'll bet lots of people returning from Canada with Fido are going to be surprised, as previously all you needed was proof of vaccination.

There has been a lot of discussion (much of it heated) on the various Snowbirds Facebook groups I belong to. Many Canadians are really upset about the increased vet paperwork needed and the fact that it is only good for 30 days, so if they get it all done then something happens (ie; bad weather, family emergency) that causes them to delay their departure too much it all has to be done again.
Our daughter-in-law's best friend is a vet in Barrie ON and is not happy with the amount of work it will make for her already very busy team this fall when folks are getting ready to head south. She said the best thing about the new regulations is that pets need to be microchipped which she is a big advocate for.

My wife brought her dog to Canada for a Christmas vacation. No issue getting paperwork here. Entering Canada no issue. Coming back on New Years Day with a ticket to our destination onward ticket to Cancun. (half the price) No issue leaving YYZ as it just happened to be Mexico has "lax" regulations but upon arriving home I went to immigration first as that was where I was told to talk to the people to unload our bags here as we would not be going farther. Wife calls me and says the Dog cannot enter the country because does not have paperwork. My wife had no idea and when we left as 4 residents and luggage for vacation not moving no one let us know as the requirements of coming back. We had to fly to Cancun and go through some hoops exposing our dog to much worse then anything in frozen Canada.

After this I found out twice the requirements for entering the country from posts on facebook within a few months.

Any vet can obtain USDA accreditation but many do not have it. You have to take a course, and then apply for accreditation. I do not personally have it, but I’m a veterinary neurologist and therefore am not someone who would be writing health certificates. My guess is that there will be problems finding USDA accredited vets for awhile after this new rule comes into effect, so people should plan ahead and not assume they will be able to find a USDA accredited vet at the last minute prior to travel.
