Bill Mahr is an acquired taste. You need to wear a hard shell to watch him. It took me decades to tolerate him. He says what he thinks and does not care who he offends on either side.

I actually like Real Time. It can be funny and informative. His show is an attempt to be controversial with a sense of humor. Sometimes it works and sometimes it is just sad, but I did stop taking medical advice from Maher when he repeatedly defended the anti-vaxxers.

He sounds like one of those annoying old men that I try to avoid when I go anywhere. They always need to go on and on and on, likely because they have no one who will listen to them at home.

He is also a lifetime bachelor who does not believe in marriage, commitment or monogamy. He once talked about his sex life on his show but usually does not open up. I must admit I do record his show and watch most episodes but like I said, it is an acquired taste. He gets great guests appearances. I like that he invites both conservative and liberal guests. And he does not debate or criticize during the interviews, even when it is apparent he vehemently disagrees. The interviews are usually my favorite part of the show. Once the guests are gone, everything is fair game.
