New restaurant that we tried: Tibetan

We just tried a new restaurant that claims to have Tibetan cuisine.

Most of it seemed to be south asian influenced. DW tried Chicken Tikka Masala curry which she does not tolerate spice well, but it was on the edge of her tolerance.

I had Chicken Thukpa which was a noodle soup that was wonderfully spicy and I would definitely get it again. They also had mutton on the menu which I want to try. I love lamb, but more and more, lamb is grain fed and when it is, it loses its "gamey" flavor which I love. I suspect mutton, will give me that taste.

Have anyone else experienced Tibetan food?

We have a Tibetan restaurant close to us, and it is one of our favorites. Our favorite appetizers are Vegetable Samosa, Vegetable Pakora, Dal Soup and their Butter Naan. Their Chicken Tikka Masala is one of their specialties and is fantastic. The menu definitely has influences from SE Asian and Indian cuisine, but is unique enough to stand out from other restaurants.

This is making me hungry -- maybe we will head there for lunch today? :)

I suppose it was a perk of living in Boston/Cambridge most of my 1st 35 yrs of life. I had it in 1985 for the 1st time.
I SWEAR Tikka Masala is Indian, right on the other side of the border, no? I've had TM > a dozen times, maybe 2 dozen. I used to get it frequently in Harvard Sq when I worked there. But, culinary misappropriation or something like that? Not that I remember what I had back in the '80s in a Tibetan restaurant. I guess when you live in Cambridge, there isn't any cuisine that is all that "exotic". Ethiopian? Been there. Done that. 1980s.

Where was tikka masala invented?

Inventor of the UK's 'true national dish' dies at 77 | CNN

Ali Ahmed Aslam is said to have invented chicken tikka masala at his Glasgow restaurant in the 1970s. With its chunks of spiced chicken surrounded by a rich tomato and yogurt-based sauce, chicken tikka masala is one of the UK's most beloved dishes

We have a Tibetan restaurant not too far from us. We eat at Indian restaurants often and found lots of similarities on the Tibetan menu. Because of the countries' proxunity, that makes sense. It also may reflect the restaurant chef selecting menu items that will seem familiar to more diners.

I really don't care that Tikka Marsala is the south asian equivalent of "chop suey". It is something DW can eat while I indulge in something more exotic.

There you go. Invented by an Indian guy in Scotland. And then he emigrated to Harvard Sq. I've heard people swear Gen'l Gao's is American and that it is Chinese.
None of it stopped me from ordering both of them many times. :D
