I usually shop around for rental car, often revisiting my reservations to see if rates are better. Today I looked at a reservation I made in May and saw a new tax.

Rent Tax Surcharge 7.50/day

This increased my rental by $67.50

When did this tax go into effect?

Thanks, John

I "KNOW" the tax was in effect in October. Think it actually went into effect 1 July 2011. (Thank you Hawaii legislature for taxing tourists !!!) Actually they did have a daily tax of about $3.00 +/- that had been in effect for "many" years, that should have shown on your rental paperwork, so the increase, per week, should be about an additional $25.

It looks like every move Hawaii makes now trying to make money goes against people wanting to come there for vacations. At some point you would think they would try making it easier to spend a week in Hawaii.:crash:

These hotel taxes and parking fee's and now rental car fee's plus airline fee's makes me want to run to the airport right now!:hysterical:

Austin, TX is not any better

The car rental taxes in Austin are also very high. We usually pay as much for the tax as we do the rental car rate doubling our cost.
