New owner here (resale of course :) ...DH and I are exploring the HGVC website and trying to determine when to take our first trip. We seem to recall from the sales presentation (where we did NOT buy) that there is a way to book a last minute vacation for very little without using points. Is that through RCI or HGVC? (Or is it something completely made up by sales folks to get you to purchase??) Just trying to figure out our options.

What they are referring to are the RCI Last Call rentals. They are generally off shoulder (non peak) places that didn’t get taken through the exchanges. There also a HGVC Open Season rentals. Those are unbooked rooms that you can book 30 days out. The rates on those are pretty high. In many cases, you could book through Hilton or other travel sites for less.

Once you get RCI access from HGV they hide the Last Call Rentals in the Binocular menu on the upper right.

You may be thinking of Open Season (cash) bookings for HGVC-units. The "OS" window is 0-30 days before check-in, and there's a 2N min. In theory, the OS cash-rate is less than what you would be charged if you booked thru Hilton Hotels.

However, that is not always true, so you should check with Hilton Hotels to see if they can beat the Open Season rate. Also: OS is non-refundable, but most HH rates are until the cancellation deadline.
