Marriott has plans to build a new 388 timeshare resort in Kihei, sometime in the next three years. The Maui Lu resort,on 26 acres, will be leveled to make room for the new development. The Maui Planning Commision has voted in favor of the project to proceed and will schedule a public hearing. The resort will be across the ocean, on South Kihei Road. Most of the units will be one or two stories, with lock off capabilities. The plans are to have a one story beach club on the oceanside.

Will they really go forward with building in this economy, I wonder? I know this location very well as we stay in Kihei almost every year. The area is not too far from Wailea which I prefer over Ka-anapali beach but no timeshares are allowed there. We like Kihei and feel home here between the local people but if you like a plush resort area, then Kihei may not be for that person.

I also read that they are going to have a Whole Foods store in Kihei where we like to shop at home but, in Maui, we prefer the little local farm stores where people grow the fruit and vegetables in their own backyard. Everything is so ripe and fresh. :) I can hardly wait to go back again next March/April for four whole weeks. :D

Whole Foods is planning on opening at Maui Mall in Kahului. The first humpback whales were seen last week. March and April is agreat time to be here--great weather and whale watching. Yee's produce stand, just north of the Kihei post office has nice selection of local fruit and definitely the best mangoes you will ever find. I also saw airfares from LA to Maui roundtrip under $400.00 and quite often in the mid $500s

Thanks for the correction. I meant the resort is not on the ocean side of South Kihei Road

That's interesting because Star Market in Kihei told us that they were going to be a Whole Foods store so that isn't true? Yes, we know that little stand and buy their delicious mangos too. :D There is a bigger farmer's market on the way to Lahaina but still in Kihei. They seem to alternate their days when they are open. There was only one day that both were closed so you can buy fresh fruit almost every day which we took advantage of. The fresh and ripe fruit of the local stands is no comparison to the hard and non-ripe fruit you buy at the regular supermarkets.

Last year or the year before they also spotted the first whale in October. There are so many now so we'll see more of them and the season may last longer too. :) You make me look forward to our next trip to Maui. :D

We were in Laguna Beach, CA last week and also spotted a whale but he was heading north so not to Maui. All of us saw him for at least 20 minutes heading north. Most likely it was a blue whale and there may have been two of them because we saw bigger and smaller spouts. It may have been a male and female.

I looked it up on the Internet because I didn't think we would see whales this early but they are spotted in the area and even some other species too. The proof is here and I can highly recommend this tour as we went with them a few years ago. It was wonderful and we saw so much. There are many whale watching tours from several beach cities here to choose from so you don't have to drive far.

The link would not work for me as I got this warning notice last night and now again but you can read the article here too, I hope. The condo units should have an ocean view from there but further away than the MOC has at Ka-anapali beach because they are on the beach.

Kihei has nice beaches too and so does Wailea which is close. What a pity that they finally got approval when the economy is down but three years later this may have changed and timeshare condos are selling again. We have seen these cycles before but the Marriott isn't the new owner yet according to this article. Is it possible that they still could back out of this deal after reading these stories here? Times are tough for timeshare developers too.

I wonder how far this resort will be from the Worldmark on South Kihei road?

I looked it up and the property is not where I thought it was as it is north of our timeshare in Kihei so it's a little further away from the Wailea beaches where we like to snorkel but closer to Lahaina which is still quite a drive.

Here is the link from the Worldmark in Kihei to the Aston Maui Lu. Maui Lea at Maui Hill is the closest of the three to Wailea but Worldmark has a nice public beach right across the road.

There are quite a few timeshares in Kihei that are part of regular condo buildings and some are on the ocean too but they have very few units available. Only the Maui Schooner is a timeshare resort only without private condos there.

Ok, now correct me if I'm wrong....but isn't that the area where the seaweed grows and it smells????

Someone mentioned that area a long time ago on a forum and said the way the wind blows and the seaweed growth makes for an unpleasant smell.

There was a smell many years ago but not now because they groom the beach five times a week but it is still not a nice beach for swimming or snorkeling unless you go beyond the dead reef. There are no waves to speak of because it's in a little bay of a bigger bay so the algae has a chance to grow on the reef and then washes ashore. This is a problem here and the county is constantly trying to fight it because this beach is in front of the Waipuilani Park. I heard that they are planning to use a big vacuum cleaner to vacuum the reef. I don't know if they have done it already?

It used to be a nice beach for walking twice a day but lately the water has been so high that there hardly was a beach left. Here are a few newer pictures of the beach in front of the Maui Schooner and the Maui Sunset too that I took the last two years. There may even be a short video clip of the beach too that I took in April.

The beach may be nicer again where the new Marriott is planning to build because it's away from that little bay and the reef and there are many nice little beaches along the road driving to Lahaina where you can swim and snorkel and do not have the algae problem.

Wasn't this the place where you could have a nice brunch quite a long time ago? It's on a slope or is that another place yet? I hope the OP will let us know if you don't know.

Boca, we all would like that the Marriott would build a timeshare resort in Wailea but Wailea doesn't allow it and I don't see that change. Attached is the map where the new resort will be built. It is a little away from the center of Kihei. Personally, I love the drive between Kihei and Lahaina as you drive along the ocean unless you take the highway. Sometimes I wonder if the waves will go over the road when it is stormy because the road is so low. I hope this stretch of road will never change.
