So, I finally get a new computer- HP Pavilion with Windows 10 installed and only have it for a couple of weeks and suddenly the updates do not install.

Tried restarting, etc. Set to actually install when the computer is not in use. It was working- last updates for 12/31/15.

I am besides myself. I am sorry my husband talked me into getting a new laptop. I had an HP with Vista and- yes- I was starting to have issues with it but I didn't expect I would have any problems with a brand new computer. All I do is check emails, Facebook, banking. No games or movie watching or anything like that.

Have 2 printers installed. Ugh! Driving me nuts!

I just Googled "windows update won't install" and found an MS support page specifically on the subject. Might be worth trying.

HP Pavilion = Problems?

I'm admittedly a computer dunce, but observant. My consistent observation (on these TUG forums and elsewhere as well) is that the words "HP Pavilion" and "problems" seem to routinely appear together, hand in hand, like the words "salt and pepper". Would any knowledgeable techies here care to speculate why that might be?

:shrug:I have an HP Pavillion that will not die.

One of the keys for HP computers is to run the HP updates--not just accept any old driver that gets installed.

Although, I did allow ASC driver updater to replace all my drivers on the HP (after HP stopped supporting that model--too old) and the system continues to work wonderfully.

Not sure about other's luck

Purely coincidence? :)

Perhaps, and I certainly can't claim to definitively know otherwise, but I've never been much of a believer in "coincidence".
A few random observations may be coincidence, but at some point widespread repetition instead becomes a pattern, no?

For the record, I certainly have no "beef" with HP as a company. My HP Laser Jet printer has been going strong for nearly 15 years now, with no problems.

HP adds a layer of monitoring and update software to its computers, sometimes called "bloatware", this adds another level of complexity to keeping your computer up to date. Most all of the big manufacturers do this, some techies prefer to remove the bloatware, KISS principle.

To the OP, try rolling your system back to when it worked using System Restore applet in Control Panel.

I actually loved my older HP Pavilion with Vista. It only recently started to have problems and my husband was spending a lot of time trying to fix it, so at his (and my son's) urging I sprung for another. This time with a nice big 17 inch screen with a Best Buy rating from Consumer Reports.

Thanks. I have been considering doing that. Husband is going to try something else tonight and if that doesn't work I will restore.

Thank. Yes, I looked at that page but got overwhelmed. I had gotten the Blue Screen of Death twice in the past two weeks, which is how I thought to check to make sure the computer was being updated. Then I saw that everything failed after 12/31.

My 2c.

Backup your computer/data.

Restore your computer to factory new.
Reload your programs and data.

This will likely solve your problems.

It seems harsh, but if you haven't had it too long, it's not that hard. Costco has great backup drives....or if you're on high-speed, just back-it-up to google drive with windows backup.

Tuesday, I came home after a hard days' work to find that DW had managed to lock up her new Dell LT.
The screen had a bunch of blank-folders and the Start Menu wouldn't work. "Computer is broken," she says.

I pressed the on/off button until it died. Waited awhile, and then pressed the button to reboot.
It worked like a charm and no problems since.
...

Update: After a recent Win10 update, my DT would not connect to the internet.
I got error message "Internet Protocols missing." Went online with a tablet.
Someone suggested the problem was "NetBIOS over TCP/IP."
All I did was same as above... Turn off, wait and then reboot... and here I am.
...

Moral: Win10 updates can be the culprit. When in doubt... reboot.
...

Having recently suffered thru the HP Pavilion - Win 10 update disaster, I'm firmly convinced that there is a serious incompatibility between HP Pavilion and Windows 10 drivers. In a situation like this Windows 10 just provides a generic driver for instances where vendors like HP will not provide certified/tested Windows 10 compatible drivers.

The HP Pavilion laptop is now resting comfortably under my desk with clean Windows 7 reinstalled. I can't imagine ever using it again.

But mine actually came with windows 10 installed. It is brand new. It's not like I upgraded from another windows version.

My husband has a Toshiba and he had an awful time upgrading to 10, but he finally was able to do it (He has a lot of patience- went on for weeks). My son had some problems upgrading and decided to, unfortunately, wipe out his Windows 8 on his SONY and then he put in windows 10 and now his computer always freezes at least one time when in use. And because he wiped out his windows 8 there is no going back.

This is why I always refused to upgrade my old Pavilion laptop with Vista. I left well enough alone.

Now I figured since I have a new computer there would be no issues- but- no cigar.

There were some problems recently with W10 updates. I had to restart one myself. It wasn't a big deal.
What's the specific error code you're getting with the fail to update? I'll look it up.

I have you ALL beat ... my secret HP weapon is my close relative who is an "officer of the corporation" (now retired) ... who I call and bitch at. At whatever hour of the day or night ... has gotten me (in the past) a new FREE machine dropped shipped to my house (and to another sister's house) every few years.

PS Drop shipping a NEW HP machine is far, far cheaper and less PIA than playing remote the "PC support relative".

Mary Ann, If you've just had it 2 weeks, take it back where you got it and get a different brand. If it was at Costco, you have 90 days, no questions asked.

I know how frustrating it is too get something new that doesn't work as you expect, but this is a mechanical/electronic item, built in China, and as such is subject to manufacturing defect.

Good Luck

The Macbook we purchased for our son as a high school freshman entry gift is going strong. He graduated from college 3 years ago, and he tells us that the laptop is working as good today as the day he received it. He has no desire to upgrade or buy a new computer. "No reason to" is his reply.

I've never owned a non-Apple product that I could say this about. Business or personal.

Here's an analogy:

You take a bowling ball, and bring it to rest on one of it's holes. You then begin to stack boxes on top of it. If you're very careful, you can stack a few boxes until they topple over.

Now, you do the same with a cinder block. What do you suppose the results would be?

It's all about operating system. It's the foundation of any computer.

Bought it at Best Buy. I was thinking of doing a restore and if that didn't work, taking it back. I have to check their return policy.

But now my husband tried something else- don't even ask- I am clueless- and after a lot of trials and glitches it seems to have worked-at least for now. Weird thing is that it now does not show any update history. My husband says it might be because one of the updates was an "upgrade' to the existing windows 10, so it was like it started over (with the updates).

I also have issues with that adobe flash player- I had to install it because my 401K website uses that. In fact, I wonder if that had something to do with the problem because one of the updates was for Adobe Flash.

I disabled adobe flash now in the add-ons and I will activate it when I need to use it.

All very complicated.

But mine actually came with windows 10 installed. It is brand new. It's not like I upgraded from another windows version....

The conversion from Win 7 to Win 10 went fine. The problem occurred during routine automated post-installation updates. It's the software update that killed the machine, not the original operating system "upgrade".

Either way, it's a BRAND NEW computer. Take it back to the Geeks at Best Buy and have them make it right. Whether it's hardware or a software upgrade or whatever, they will make it right. I'd have them strip all the bloatware off it while they are at it.
