I have deposited my very first exchange...and a little nervous about how well this will work....We are asking for a specific resort, The Royal Sands, but gave 4 different weeks in Feb-April 2009. I realize this a the most popular time, but we are hoping to get the exchange completed and with enough warning to not have last minute airfare costs kill us. Would we be wiser to add some weeks in June (hurricane season?) to increase our chances? Is summertime in Cancun unbearably hot? Or do we just need to be calm for a few months and give the options we have already given them a chance for success? Or are we just living a fantasy...and need to make our request for Spring 2010?
How far ahead of your trip for spring 2009 is it just time to give up and try for the next year? (or when is the best time to "jump ship"!)
P.S. Our Timeshare is from Tahiti Village (brand new bldg just opened in August 2008)
Sorry so many questions.....any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much!!

I don't know what do you mean by four different weeks ? Are these individual weeks and are any holiday weeks, like Easter, included ? If at all possible you should extend your time interval from, say, early Febr to early Apr. making it about eight weeks and increasing your chances proportionally. Another important factor is unit size. Many owners lock off their units, making studios more readily available. IMO, you have a fair chance with a studio, but not if you want a two bdr. unit.
Another point, I don't know if you are aware that guests of any one of the Cancun Royals can use facilities at all Royal resorts. We have been to all the Royals and found their practice of sharing facilities very helpful. I would certainly seriously consider staying in one of the other Cancun Royals as an alternative to the Royal Sands if the dates are so important to you.

It will depend on the strength of your deposited week (location, resort, unit size and week), but also this is a bit late to be looking for that timeframe. Many start looking 1-2 years out.

by "four different weeks" I meant we have given them the option of 4 different weeks between February and April. I can't take time off at the beginning of the month, so I am forced to just schedule the last two weeks as options instead of just all of Februay thru all of April.

As to the "is Easter one of the weeks"...yes, I have included our spring break week as my daughter is in school, so, in a perfect world, if we could go during her spring break which is in March, she won't miss any school time. According to my research, Easter in 2009 is April 12th. But we also have included the last two weeks in April as one of the options.

As far as unit size, we are hoping for a one bedroom. (don't need 2 bdrms)

I would add the other Royal resorts in the search. It is kind of late for 2009 Feb-April search...

I would add June if it works for you. It's hot and a bit humid, but nothing serious unless you visit Chitzen Itza. I would start the spring 2010 search asap since the earlier you plan the better your chances of exchanging. With people orried about flight cost a lot of good exchanges are opening up so it's not impossible even though it's high season.

I just received a confirmation into Sheraton's brand new Westin resort not far from the Sands. My request for all f the Royals was placed in late January 08. My confirmation was early July 08 for Easter week and it is for a 2 bdrm. I'd hang in there and also add the new Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort that II is not showing yet in their catalog to my list of requests.
Here is their website if you are interested.

I have no experience for that time of year but it was really easy getting the Royals this year in May. A lot of people are not going down to Mexico this year. However, expanding to the other resorts is also a good idea. Good luck. Funtime

Based on experience, I would definitely expand your search to the other Tri-Royals to increase your chances. I got cocky one year and only searched for the Sands and it never matched - where I had always matched into one of the other Royal Resorts.

The Sands is more convenient because of the Spa and exercise facility being right there - but that is about it. Guess it would make a difference if you exercised daily - but getting an exchange is better than not at all. It is also closer to restaurants, but no big deal - since busses are cheap and run frequently.

Is it possible you can't find any units at The Royal Sands because they haven't been deposited yet??? I ask this because I am a new Royal Caribbean owner - and I THOUGHT I read somewhere that I can't deposit my week until my maintenance fee for the year to be deposited had been paid. I'm still trying to figure all of this out - although we plan to use our week in 2009, so I still have time. I am thinking about depositing my 2010 week (I would need to join II first) but I'm still a little confused about how/when to do this. IMO, we have a fabulous unit for a prime week, so - if traders are looking a year or more out, I should consider depositing the 2010 week in early 2009, right? Do I just pre-pay my maintenance fees?

Yes, your maintenance fees usually have to be up to date to deposit. Usually fees are collected around Oct-Feb at most timeshares. I think the Royals allows you to pay up to a certain period before your use week. Usually if you deposit early your trade power is better and if you request far out you increase your chances of getting a trade.

The maintenance bills come about 3 months before the use period. I owned late March - early April and got the bill between Christmas and New Year's.
