I hate the outside noise when we're traveling, especially if there are a few drunks or partiers outside my window. We used to have a Brookstone travel alarm with nature sounds that worked great but it lasted 4 whole times of use. So I don't want to buy from them again. It doesn't have to be an alarm..I can use my phone for that. Does anyone have something they use with nature sounds that they can recommend?

I used to use a sound machine that I bought a long time ago at a Wal Mart while on vacation. It still works well (Homedics), but I find that these machines use too short a recording and can set up a pattern that my brain decided it wanted to listen for.

Since I usually bring a laptop along, what I did was to purchase (on line) a pure white noise CD for about $10 and ripped this recording to my laptop and then start this playing with the player in repeat mode and plug in the laptop and let it play all night.

Also serves as a night light until I can get into bed and the screen goes dark.

Liz, how long had you had it? They don't have the same model anymore and I don't have a receipt.

The white noise CD is a good option. I'll have to consider that.

If you go the CD route, be sure to rip to an lossless format like wav, or flac if your media player will play flac files. This has worked fine for me and it is one less plug in box I have to find room for in a suitcase.

We just carry earplugs -- much easier to block out the noise :)

Stu...I'm so glad you posted about that repeating pattern. I thought I was the only one who could hear that!

Of course, playing a white noise CD means that your computer also stays on with its associated sounds, unless you bring a CD player with you....

Go to Marpac.com. They have a device called a sleep-mate. Dual control is best. Really good white noise sound.

My whole family always sleeps with a fan on, so we always take these with us on vacation. 1.5 lb., very easy to pack and durable.

We just use a basic air purifier maching from Target or Walmart. They usually have 2 or 3 settings so you can choose how much white noise you really want.
