Need Help with MS Word

Hi,
Something is weird with my MS Word program. At least I think it's the program but maybe it's something with my computer itself.
I was typing on a document someone else made up and there were 'lines' to type on.
As I typed my words would appear a line below where they should be (even though I had the cursor in the correct place). When I would hit the space bar that one word would jump up to the correct position and the process would repeat.

I tried checking the 'insert' button - did it both ways and that isn't it.
I tried the autofomat feature and that changed things but didn't help the problem!

any ideas?? it took me twice as long to get my work done because of this today. thanks!

Take a look at paragraph borders. These will probably be under a Format menu. (The commands may vary somewhat depending on your version of Word.)

Is it necessary for you to have the lines under your typing? If not, try selecting the entire document (or the area where you want to get rid of the lines) and then go to Format / Borders and Shading / and then click the borders off.

If you need lines, you could then select your text and underline it instead of typing on the lines.

Another possibility is that you should be in Insert mode as opposed to Typeover - not really sure how to change this, but look at Help in Word and search for Insert. If you were Inserting you might be pushing the borders along in front of you

In my experience autoformat is something to avoid. Word tries to be smarter than us, but it often does things we don't want it to.

Thanks for your help. I am working my way thru your suggestions but no luck so far. I think tomorrow I'll have to experiment some more!

At one point, I did take out their lines but it's bugging me as to why I have this issue.

Borders, Outlining, and other features of Word can be very frustrating. If they work, they're great, but it's easy for them to get messed up.

If this is an important document and must have the lines, you might want to either start over with a new one from the original source, or save as... in text format, stripping out all the formatting, and then put it back in.

You could also google Microsoft Word Borders Disappearing or whatever key words seem to help.

THANK YOU!!! :whoopie:

I searched ms word + space bar + format and found this site

http://help.southmountaincc.edu/NR/...-A7B50A02CF48/0/FormattingProblemsMsWord1.doc

That seems to have cured the problem. This is a doc that I will be using for work this year so potentially, this was going to be a huge pain!!

I think that this tip may cure other MS word formatting issues so I thought I'd post it for other poor souls who get locked into these things!!

Thanks for the help once again!
