In another thread I asked for help deciding between Marriott hotels on St. Croix and Tortola. For now, I have reservations held on Tortola. Reality of getting flights has set in. Last night I called both Delta and AA to see what frequent flyer seats were available DTW-EIS. Only AA goes into EIS. It's another stop in San Juan on the way DTW-MIA-SJU-EIS. Since it's January and we could get stuck with a snow storm delay I thought of going DTW-MIA the day before and then MIA-EIS the following morning. There is no Milesaver availability, just Anytime availability.

Someone on flyertalk suggested expertflyer.com to get milesaver alerts. Anyone have other suggestion about waiting for milesaver availability?

Are there frequent ferries from St. Thomas to Tortola? Would it be easier to fly into STT and get a ferry to Tortola?

Any help is appreciated,
Suzzanne

Stt to Tortola is very easy, ferries, charters, small planes, etc. no worries there.

Check www.vinow.com for more information on schedules.

For a travel date of 2-6-2012 I booked AA LGA-STX and STT-JFK on 5-8-2011. I got milesaver fare RT with BC on the return. If you go through STT to get to the BVI your best bet is the Fast Ferry

http://tortolafastferry.com/schedule.html

It only has three trips a day and it's $60 RT PP.

I don't think anybody flies between EIS and STT but the way to check is to do a wikipedia search on both airports and see if they have a common airline. Don't bother with the majors just look for Cape Air, Liat Taca Seabourne and independents like that.

Good Luck!!

For the island hoppers we have used both Winair and Liat without any complaints. In fact, we like them better than Amercian Eagle! Not sure if they both go to the 2 islands in question, we used them for SKB-SXM.

We have also used LIAT (leaves islands any time!) for SKB-SXM-STT.
This works, but standard costs are high if you can't get one of their deals - often only available at short notice.
Flight frequency can be limited and flight times can be longer than you might imagine, so check it out.
Good luck.

We have the outbound flights to STT using AA Milesaver award :) ORD-MIA-STT. This day will be pretty much just traveling from Chicago to the Caribbean. It gets us into St. Thomas at 9 p.m. the night before our reservation begins on Tortola. Now I'd like to as for suggestions on where to stay either at the airport or the ferry dock so we can catch an early ferry to Tortola the next day. I'm just looking for a clean bed to crash after a day of flying.

Best Western Emerald Beach by the airport is where we usually "crash" for one night at the beginning or end of a trip to STT.

Very basic room, but a pretty beach to wake up to.

If you're having trouble booking saver awards on AA from your home town, one thing to check is whether you can save miles by booking it as two separate segments, and using BA miles for the international segment. To do this you need access to BA miles, but they are pretty easy to get. You can transfer Amex or Chase points or other hotel points to get them.

They are flexible because awards are distance based. So, if you can get a saver award to MIA, you may then be able to book from MIA to STT (or other caribbean cities served by AA) using BA miles. To STT it's 7500 miles one way. To NAS or PLS it's 4500. Usually if there is no saver inventory on AA, you likely won't find BA partner award inventory either, but it's free and easy to check by creating a BA frequent flier account and using their online tools.

Do you a reduced rate website (priceline, hotwire, hotels.com) to book the Best Western?

Thanks,
Suzzanne
