We are going to Maui the first of July, and I was able to book a 1BR for a few nights. Now my 2 adult sons are joining us--so 4 adults--and so I want a 2 BR if possible. Twice I have seen the 2 BR--and showed I could book w/ points (but did not have enough w/o 1st canceling/changing the 1 BR), but when I tried to rebook the 1 BR reservation, the desired time was "grayed out"-would not let me change-stating outside booking window. I tried a few times. Then, after a few minutes, the nights were gone. Both times, the HGVC office was closed, so I couldn't call for assistance. Any idea if I'm doing something wrong? Or, maybe someone else was trying to book at the same time?
I was reluctant to cancel my 1BR 1st, as it's not easy to get nights and I did not want to be left with no option to stay.
Any idea what is the issue?

You can't change a reservation within 60 days, so I think you are running into that limitation. The only way to "change" your reservation at this point is to cancel (forfeiting your reservation fee, if any), and the booking a new reservation. With that said, I completely understand your hesitation of cancelling first because at this late time, it is going to be very difficult to find a new reservation and, as you have seen, when something pops up it goes fast. I would look to secure other accommodations at this point and then if something does become available and it is during customer service hours, call and see if they can secure the booking.

You could also keep your existing 1BR and book a second 1BR either with points if you can find one now or using open season once you're 30 days out. Even if you could only get it for a few of the nights, you could squeeze into the original 1BR at the beginning and/or end of the original itinerary.

We did it like this - and note we're always equitable about who takes the pull out couch :]
