My non-stop flight for fall has been canceled, and I've been rebooked on a one-stop. Based on past experience, I'm confident that the non-stop will be added back at some point. Am I correct to assume that I won't be automatically rebooked on the non-stop if it's added back? I don't plan to cancel the trip, and, in order of preference, here's what I'd like:

1. non-stop using miles
2. non-stop using cash
3. one-stop using miles
4. one-stop using cash.

How should I approach this?

The good thing about a FF ticket from AA is that you can change the dates or routing as long as the origin and destination remain the same, all for no charge.

If the rebooking is an accceptable schedule for you given the currently available options, you don't need to do anything. By doing nothing and not confirming with AA that you have accepted the rebooking, you have the best chance to be rebooked on the NS if it appears again in the future, even if there are no FF seats.

If the current rebooked schedule is not the best for you, you may want to call and have yourself booked on the best available flight currently scheduled. This will mean that you have accpted the schedule change and you won't de able to move back to the NS unless their is an available FF seat. On the plus side, if the NS never reappears, you will have the best available 1 stop routing.

You should then continue to monitor the flights so that you can act quickly if the NS comes back on the schedule. If you wait, it is possible the NS will sell out and then AA will have no flexibility in putting you back on the flight.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

Suzanne has given you good advice, I would reschedule for the best available one stop using miles.

If a non-stop is reinstated, I'd call them and get put on that flight -- save your original confirmation (that used to be a non-stop) because they may try some BS and tell you that there aren't any of the cheapo mileage seats on the new non-stop. If you have the documentation from the now-canceled flight, that should help you to get reinstated.

Good luck,

Greg

I am pretty sure you would not be automatically re-booked. I think your best bet is to wait a while longer and don't do anything on AA's site that would indicate your acceptance of the new flights. Keep checking on a regular basis and see if they reinstate the non-stop flight.

If the flight you have right now is unacceptable you might want to change it to something more fitting.

Also, even though you typically aren't allowed to change your routing; if there is a non-stop to a nearby airport that works for you, you might be able to change that (ie. to OAK instead of SFO, or LAX instead of BUR; departing from MDW instead of ORD). The key if you go this route is to say the routing they put you on is unacceptable.

Thank you for the advice. I'm going to do nothing for a few months to see if they reinstate the non-stop.

Cheryl, you say that "based on past experience," you are confident that the nonstop flight will be rescheduled? Out of curiosity, could you give details about your experience? I am asking not just out of idle curiosity but because my nonstop flight (JFK-SXM) was cancelled and now connects in Miami with a very long layover (and a ridiculous 5:45 AM departure). I'd love to have the nonstop reinstated!

Several years ago around this time of the year our fall non-stop on AA from ORD to PVR, which we had taken many times, was canceled. I was suprised because the flight was usually full. Several months later it was reinstated. This time our fall non-stop to SJD was canceled. Because we have taken the non-stop to SJD several times and it is usually full, I think there is a good chance it will be reinstated also.
