OK - let me start at this from a different direction. We are looking at spending a long weekend in Detroit & never been there. We will be attending an event at the Cobo Center and have been looking at hotels in the downtown area. After reading tripadvisor reviews warning about not walking downtown at night time, etc. I am not sure what to do. How bad an area is the downtown area? I was originally thinking of staying close to the Cobo Center, but am now wondering if we would be better staying further out and taking a cab in for the event. Advice please from my TUG family.

Thanks,

This hotel just had an open house this past weekend and people are saying how awesome it looks. It will be open for reservations starting this Wednesday. You might want to look into this http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=3001
I was attacked and mugged in a parking garage there myself. I should have known better to be all alone in a dark parking garage and this could have happened anywhere I guess. Not saying this to scare you just be aware of your surroundings. I am much wiser now and do not let that incident stop me from going down into the city for all the events that it has to offer.
