I know there are several (if not more) brilliant IT minds that frequent here. I'm looking for a 'for dummies ' version of the answer to my question.

Almost daily, I use my Kindle to verify balance in my checking account. (Okay, I confess, after 20 years in banking, I don't keep a register for this account. )

Recently, the site gave me the message that it needed to send me a 'verification code to proceed. The screen gave a list of choices of what method to use. I figured it was because I've been using Kindle while traveling, the request didn't bother me.I

So, I click on text me, selecting the cell phone number they have on record.

The text arrived in my phone, a moment later.

HOW CAN THAT happen so quickly? It was like, snap!

I'm imagining data transferring through the air... But the speed?

Yes, it does happen that quickly. For me I have terrible internet speed and when I need to verify anything and they send the link in a snap, so to speak. ;)

Two layer verification is becoming quite common, with verification codes coming by text. Banks and Social Security use it a lot. You’re logged in to your account that has the cell number, so it’s pretty immediate. But it ensures you’re not being spoofed.

After receiving the verification request one too many times, I called the bank to inquire why it was happening, assuming it was my problem. Was surprised to hear it's a bankwide issue and 'they are working on it'. Now I'm thinking perhaps they are aware of a security breach and are being cautious.

It happens to me whenever I clear my cookies and browser history.
It's like wiping C3PO's memory and having to restore from a backup.
... hopefully, up to date.
