Owners update yesterday at Parc Soleil Orlando…

This was a promo 3-night stay, so we didn’t have a choice but to attend. We currently own EOY Kohala Suites, 13440 pts, and this fits us perfectly for now.

Primary sales guy was fine. The pitch was to upgrade to an annual 15k points in Chicago. The hook was that deed sales are going away, and I’d never be able to get an every year deed at Kohala Suites, even if I wanted it. We explained that we are happy with what we have, use what we have, enjoy our deed and home-week priority, and have no intent to buy Chicago when we live an hour away. He was nice and “understanding”, and then sent in the closer.

I’ve been through this enough times to understand the process and know the game, so I was prepared - to a point. This guy was a real piece of work.

While the first guy seemed very knowledgeable of my profile and usage, this guy was trying to sell me on Max. When I explained that I’m already Max, he tried to convince me that what I have is not good enough and that I would be making a mistake by passing on the offer. I get it - sales. I’m in sales. I don’t blame a seller for selling. But there was an attitude here that went from ‘pressure’, to just being a complete turn off. I would have just left, but I wanted to be sure I got my 45k HH points. He asked me if it was a final no, and I agreed. He just dug in harder, telling me I don’t need to own in Hawaii and that I didn’t know what I was talking about. My wife started trying to explain that even if we wanted to upgrade, our daughter is starting law school, and it’s just not the right time to lay out another $35k to HGV.

Finally I told him that he’s completely lost me and we needed to leave. I very sternly told him there is absolutely no way I would ever buy anything from HIM and that he needed to let us leave. He kept going. It got to a point where I finally leaned in across the desk and said, “Now you are truly starting to piss me off. I’ve sat here for the past 15 minutes and listened to you tell me how stupid I am. Fine - you’re right - I’m a failure and I’m making the biggest mistake. But I will not buy anything from you or anyone in this office!” I stood up. He stood up. And then he finally walked away.

Then of course the last guy comes in to offer me a $1600 VIP package, which I declined. The funny thing is… I probably would have actually bought that. I’ve bought these before (11,200 points for $1600), but there was just no way I’d be giving anyone in that sales office any more of my time or money.

I’ve had pissy reps in the past, but this was far over the top.

I always wonder what the success rate is when you accuse the potential buyer of being stupid. I am not in sales, but it seems like it would be an unlikely way to make a sale.

I am glad that you met him with his own energy.

It amazes me when I hear these stories, and there are many. You would think that they would understand that telling someone that they are stupid isn't going to get you a sale.

They know they aren’t getting a sale, so I guess doing this gives them some kind of mental payoff, BPD/NPD type of person.

I actually wonder though if TUGers just know enough to not fall for it, but I somehow guess that there might be others who will fall for the higher pressure - or who are insecure or maybe elderly with some cognitive decline where these things work. The closest I've ever come to sales was working at Best Buy in the Geek Squad for a year and I never cared about selling anything - we got paid the same either way. But I have to figure they're either really slow so there's not other prospects to work on or have a personality quirk or this sort of pressure works on some people.

EDIT: That hardly seems worth it for 45k HHonors points either.

Plus a 3 night stay at Parc Soleil for OP. I would not do an presentation for 45K Hilton Honors points also. Can barely get a night at a Hampton Inn with those 45K points.

Yeah… I did the presentation for the three night stay, but I sure wasn’t gonna leave the points on the table just because of some pushy sales guy. 😀

It's best to simply say "not interested", no matter what the salesman says. If the goon says you're being dumb/stupid for not taking his offer, just say "I'm still not interested". I have a feeling your "closer" was close to being fired for zero sales.

As a side note, 25 years ago I worked for Gateway Computers tech support. One of my coworkers/supervisors said his wife went to go to a Dodge dealer to buy a Ram 1500. The price was still a bit high, the pushy salesman said the price was his final offer, so she left without it. He was concerned about it, so the next day, he went and talked to the same salesman, but he gave him more incentives bringing the cost below what his wife was offered. He took both offers to the sales manager, the manager fired the salesman. Point is, that closer is not going to make it if he goes into another sales position with that sales mentality.

Some years ago my brother and his family were staying with us on our points. They decided to go to a pitch for the perks. Early into the "discussion" the guy asked how it felt to be sponging off of our points. We're New Yorkers, and my brother still has a lot of that in him despite moving. You can imagine that it did not go well from that point forward.

Cheers.

I hope that he gave that salesman exactly what he deserved. :D

Well, I wasn't there, and my understanding is that no law enforcement was called, but reports are that it did not go well for the salesweasel.

Cheers.

In the fine print:
Your use of the phrase 'not interested' shall be interpreted as 'I want to buy the worst package for the most $$ per point at a resort with the highest MF's,' and you should keep talking until I'm willing to sign anything."

This is the crazty thing. They could take a second shot at closing if they actauly has something of value and pitched the VIP. I wonder how many non-TUG owners would consider buying if they had a nice week in Hawaii or some other place to soften them up a bit.

Getting people to say yes. Use and enjoy the product. Then upgrade them well.

Seems like these sold in under 2 hour types are just selling crap and not actually caring about the customer. To me this is the main issue with TS sales. Its transactional and the Seller knows how to lower the quality of the product to the point that it is worthless and sell on price not value.

My VIP tour the guy showed 2 years of availability to mave MAX the selection look stronger. It was way overkill and when I asked about a specific date range there was nothing there.

Sorry you had a bad time. If you choose to do that again, I'm sure it will be better..... :) YMMV..

I own in Hawaii, and they really wanted me to dump that to buy Chicago. I really like having home week advantage. They tried to convince me that I can book the Kohala anytime I want. They could be right, but I’m not budging.

In this they likely are correct. Booking Big Island properties at 276 days is really easy. If you are doing Home Week already, you are booking early, so 276 seems like it would work. And plenty of availability.

Cheers.

I missed that part lol. IDK if I'd want to do a presentation again for something like that but at least it makes a little more sense.
