My mom can't use her Getaway gift, what are some options?

Last May, we purchased a Marriott Getaway for December for my mother for Mother's Day, and now her health won't allow her to use it. If we really pushed it we could use it ourselves, but we will be at Timber Lodge and Grand Chateau before that, and just really don't need another week away.

I know we are not allowed to rent it, so what I am wondering is if there is any legal way to do an informal Getaway exchange (we could get the guest certificate) with someone wanting that week, or, could we again get the guest certificate, and they would just reimburse us for the actual cost of the Getaway. (much less than what they are on II now for the same time period.)

If either of these would meet "not renting" qualification, could I put it on "Sightings/Distressed Weeks", or would that be inappropriate?

I am not giving the location as I assume that would be considered advertising, but it is a good Marriott.

So far, other family members and friends have not been able to use it as a gift due to the dates, and it was a good deal $ dollar-wise, so if we have to just let it go, or just go for a few days, we won't suffer much...though I hate to ever waste a Marriott week!

Thanks for any opinions!

You can get a guest cert. in anyone's name. We had one we couldn't use that I gave to a co-worker. They just paid the guest cert fee. Any other transactions you make with the guest are subject to any chances you are willing to take regarding the Terms and Conditions.

I have a similar situation. I actually have 2 units at the same resort at the same time. One was a getaway week and the other XYZ week. Now one of us travelers have a serious health problem and we can't go. Called II and of course there is nothing they can do since I did not purchase the insurance. Now I'm giving the XYZ week away to a friend of mine for $49 (= cost of guest cert). The cost of the getaway week I am trying to get back from my credit card company I paid the week with. Most credit card companies offer traveler insurance. So that might be something you could check into also. By the way, my weeks were also at a very nice Marriott and both units were 3 bedroom units.
