The Japanese are celebrating Peace because they LOST WWII.
Otherwise they would be celebrating victory like we should be doing now.

yes -
I believe Los Alamos had fuel for an additional third plutonium bomb
And there was no paper executive order from Truman to drop the bomb - it was a foregone conclusion

It wasn't just the plutonium. The explosive charges used were very difficult to build. There was an explosives expert who built the charges by hand. They had to perfectly even in a full 360 radius. That was the main reason that the physicists didn't think that Trinity would work. The explosive sphere pattern wouldn't be even. . . .

Germany was very close to having a nuclear weapon. That could have changed everything. Hitler with nuclear weapons? Think of that.

The Amazon Prime show, Man in the High Castle was an excellent sci-fi show about the U.S. losing because Germany got the bomb before the U.S. did. That alternate reality show is kind of fun to watch and made me appreciate WWII even more than I did. I had 6 uncles and my dad in the war. I appreciate their service.

even though German scientists discovered nuclear fission they were not close to developing a nuclear weapon in WW2

"How close were the Nazis to developing an atomic bomb? The truth is that National Socialist Germany could not possibly have built a weapon like the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima or Nagasaki. This was not because the country lacked the scientists, resources, or will, but rather because its leaders did not really try. "

In my experience, those that celebrate war are people that watch alot of war movies but never really experienced a win or a loss in any battle. Those that have experienced war, directly or indirectly, rarely if ever talk about it because it is so messed up.

The only thing worth celebrating is peace.

War, what is it good for ? Absolutely nothing. Good God you all. Your post reminded me of this for some reason, lol.

Where do you see people celebrating war? I think you are confusing celebrating heroism, bravery, and victories with celebrating war itself. All of those items, along with peace, should be celebrated, IMO. I know of no one who thinks war, itself, is a good thing or should be celebrated.

Ever notice that those who celebrate war are politicians. Very few are veterans of the fighting. Likely one of our most peace loving presidents was Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in WWII.

I notice those who remember wars recall the soldiers and sailors who put themselves in harm's way. It is not the general whose picture is on stained glass in the churches near Normandy, France.

You are right. Celebrations are for the end of war. I should have use a different word like enthused or even like.

HBO is showing the 2019 remake of Midway now.
One of the key figures in the Battle of Midway is Admiral Yamamoto, who is mentioned in an earlier post as having been ambushed by US planes in the Solomon Islands in 1943.

National Geographic Article on Hiroshima today

Does anyone know if any part of the City was abandoned after the bombing?
