My vote is for hotel/timeshare. When you order online, your cc info is sent encrypted and converted to a virtual number to the merchant that only they can use. They don't see the number itself, and no staff can see it.
This is not at all correct. While some merchants do tokenize their payment card data, most small or medium sized merchants do not. Even those that do, they typically can detokenize your card data and see the full card number. Online payments are a pretty common place that card numbers get stolen.
