Hey Richard,

You seem to be a pretty techno savvy type of guy. Got a couple of questions for ya. I've had the Fire on order and now that it's been released I'm reading some of the reviews that aren't overly generous of it.

Mine shipped today. Naturally just before I cancelled my order. I'll probably send it back when it gets here. The part about the cloud browser not being nearly as fast as originally published turns me off. I've already got a Kindle just for reading so I don't need another one just for that.

In your opinion what is the best budget table out there. I'm just not going to spend $500-600 for an Ipad but I would like something that I can read on occasionally, get my email and browse the internet at a good speed with. Would prefer a 10" screen. Not worried so much about 3G since most of the places we go to always have wifi available. Not worried about a camera either. So far it looks like I'll continue to take my laptop with us on vacation until something better comes along. Hoping with Black Friday and the ensuing 30-40 days of sales will produce something I will be happy with.

Thanks,

Larry

Larry,

Thanks for the kind words.

You probably saw this CNET.com review: Best Android Tablets

However, none of these are what I would call budget tablets.

You probably noticed that Barnes and Noble dropped the price of the Nook Color to $199. I think I would consider a Nook Color and then getting a 8GB N2A card for $34.99 to make it a full fledged Android tablet. Can't beat that price. For additional info, you may want to reread my previous Tug thread Turn Your Nook into a Tablet

Best regards,

Richard

You have 30 days to use the new Fire and can return it no questions asked. Amazon says their browser will improve with use- that your stuff goes to the cloud and back more efficiently. Here's a c-net article and FAQ from today: http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/amazon-kindle-fire/4505-3126_7-35022491.html

At least you get to decide for yourself before you are committed- Oh, you'll also have Prime for free for those 30 days too. Looks like a win-win either way.

Don't listen to the reviews; use the device and see if it fits your needs. It might, it might not. But use it and see for yourself.

Thanks Richard, and to all the other posters for their thoughts. I'll try the Fire when it gets here and make a final decision then.

Got my Fire yesterday. Have Youtubed, Facebooked, watched Amazon Instant Video and read my email. I did not find it slow at all, but my browser at work IS slow - so I would probably be happier than some would as long as it wasnt really slow:) I have DSL at home, and didnt notice that terrible a difference.

Forgive my ignorance, I get so confused with all these new instruments. Does the Kindle Fire and the Nook Color require a subscription plan like a phone? I.e. are there additional costs beyond the initial purchase to access the internet?

Thanks,

Thanks,

No subscription required. Both are wi-fi, so in order to get new book, music, movie, or other content, or surf the Web, you DO need to be connected to a wireless network. If you don't have one at home or work or a handy McDonald's or B&N, you'll have to scout out a network in your area. Once you have downloaded the content you buy/rent (books/movies/music) you don't need to be connected to see/hear/use the content. Like reading on a plane or beach or wherever.
